Can anyone suggest a letter cage that I can put on a upvc door, the bottom panel is a solid panel.
Pup is a 5 month old Morkie, today is the first time he's done it and there happened to be a cheque in the post for £100! bank accepted it even though the corner was chewed off!
He has someone at home with him nearly all day and have a cocker spaniel too, there are plenty of toys, long walk daily, postman usually comes in the afternoon but he came early today and pup got there first!
Any help would be appreciated.

Might be just simpler to stop letting him have access to teh hall, so he is unable to practice this behaviour.

impossible, we have a dog door and the hallway leads to the kitchen to the dog door, don't ever have any of the doors closed in the house, thanks for the suggestion
I've decided to get a letter cage, just having trouble finding one suitable for a upvc door.
Are you set on getting an indoor letter cage or would you consider an outside post box?
That's what I have, because I couldn't find a cage to fit the upvc door.
The external post boxes are great, and either fix to the outside house wall or you can screw them to a piece of fence or fence post or whatever.
I find it great. They're lockable and the postman just lifts the lid and pops in your post!

Just a reminder that a long walk is a no no for a 5 month old pup. You should have only just worked up to 25 minutes a day at this age.

We have post box on house wall from b and q. Has solved the problem and has been there for years. The only problem is the occsional idiot who can't seem to read the word post next to front door and pputs post straight throw the door to be shredded by our household shredder

We have an outside post box as well, very much appreciated by the postman. At first we mounted it on the gate, then when we realised that a) the Cavalier could jump up onto the gate and balance on top of the post box (!!there's an agility dog in the making LOL) and b) the Malinois could quite easily reach somebody putting post into the box, we moved it to the outside wall out of reach of any dogs. Perfect.

If you don't want the postman to use the letterbox into the house, you can screw it/seal it shut.
We had a letterbox which came right into the main room of our house, which saw our post shredded if we weren't there when it arrived (!). We tried a cage on the inside of the door, but this didn't look great.
So we sealed/screwed that letterbox shut and screwed a custom-sign above it which says 'Please put post through door to the left' - which is a sealed letterbox on our outside gate into our garden.

What's a morkie ?.
Anyway, much cheaper and less hassle is to teach the dog to ignore the post. Doesn't take long, just needs somebody outside posting stuff through your letterbox and you inside with the dog. Every time it goes to the post just sharply say 'no'. Every time it ignores the post give praise and a treat.

arched, unfortunately that method doesn't work so well when no one is home for hours and the post arrives in a particularly tempting way...
The same principle goes for getting on the sofa, stealing food off kitchen counters or any unwanted behaviour: You need to be present to prevent it (or shut dog away when you're not present) for a very long time, before the dog can reliably be expected not to attempt it when you're not there. One session isn't going to do it.
Isn't it a maltese x yorkie!

That would be my guess. Wish we could have an indoor box, hubby says no to outdoor, our front door opens too close to the wall to have an indoor, so dogs have to be shut in the kitchen while we are out. Would be nice to give them a little more freedom, but no chance until 1 year old has learned not to shred letters!
kizziekat, would be interesting to know if he can just sniff out money. Might come in handy. Fill out a couple of lottery slips and see what one he goes for.
Be careful with the cages - we had one but my dog just attacked that and ended up losing a front tooth! We now have a letterbox outside the front door... wish l'd had one from the beginning! :(
Jean, when I say a long walk, I mean a long walk for him and it is usually about half an hour at the moment and that is with me carrying him some of the time - great when he's thick with mud lol.
Mum is a yorkshire terrier and dad is a Maltese but he's definitely more maltese with his coat texture, curly tail and he's like a little kangaroo, jumping up and down which is aparently a maltese trait, when we got him he was quite dark but his new fur is coming through really lighter so am thinking he's going to be quite white/light as he gets older.
He shredded an avon book tonight! little monster, my son got to the post before him today so that's in one piece, he's not bothered with it for the 3 months we've had him and now all of a sudden he's started shredding it! he loves pinching socks, knickers, anything really then it's a game of 'chase me' to get it off him lol
Thanks for your comments tho still no suggestion on which box to get.

I would advise that having a dog door available while you are out is not the best idea, especially with such a small dog, so easy for them to find an escape route or be stolen, not to mention getting in the habit of barking.
Confinement in a smaller area is always best (especially puppies) when unsupervised as it encourages them to settle, and helps with house-training.
I see lots of dogs left the run of the house going potty at windows (one nearly fell out of an upstairs open window) when I pass walking mine, not to mention those left in gardens barking, whenever anyone passes (especially someone with a dog/s).
my other dog uses the dog door so locking it isn't an option, someone is in the house most of the time, the pup hardly ever goes out in the garden on his own, he always has someone with him to give him a treat once he's done his business, if he did go out into the garden on his own, garden is totally secure, he doesn't bark out there.
Anyway......... a letter 'cage' (that's not a cage) has been ordered and should be here in a day or so, so problem should be solved.... soon!
