Topic Other Boards / Foo / Are they skirting over a possible hurricane again?
- By suejaw Date 22.11.12 22:44 UTC
I've just been watching the news and on the main body on ITV they said that winds predicted up to 100mph with rain on saturday, now this constitutes a hurricane essentially.

Watching the actual weather forecasts they said its likely to be windy this weekend..no mention of wind speeds at this point..

Now if they have a concern that the wind is likely to get to 100mph surely they need to seriously make this headline news so people can start putting measures in place for Saturday!!

Am I being over concerned on this matter as they can and do kill and let's think back to 1987 and Michael Fish!!

There's a great FB page called UKStormChasers  - recommend it.

Gusts of 80+mph over Capel Curig in Snowdonia today, but best of all the Stormchaser page shows a map of the long band of storms over the UK in a straight slash from the northeast down to Cornwall. This is what we've had in Somerset all day Weds & Thurs, and maybe more rainfall to come overnight, but by tomorrow morning Fri it will have moved eastwards, still in a line.

When I lived in Hampshire, and before that London, whatever my mum's weather was in Somerset was what we got a day or two later.

Ridiculous rain over the last few days here, rivers running wild, a foot or more of rain in just a few hours. Wind has dropped now which is a good thing, so I think it's passed us but will be on its way in a front moving south east tomorrow.

If the floods have subsided on the Somerset Levels the buses might be running on time to get me to my agility class.... the roads were underwater for a time out on the moors on Thursday/

Ive come off fb so can't see that group.

I saw the flooding down the west country, not good!! The big fat rain has just arrived here, wind has been getting stronger as the evening has worn on... Wonder what we'll wake to tomorrow!!

We are in danger of being flooded again (not us but in the next village) sounds like it could get as bad when we were flooded back in 2007.

The extra rain on Saturday is going to be interesting as the river is on high flood alert which considering how bad it is at the moment doesn't bode well. They have evacuated the old folks home in preparation as it was a nightmare the last time it happened.

Here is a photo we took when it happened last time .

The home is about 300 yards further down the road on the right.

Saturday is showing the worst day so don't know what they are playing as because people need to know in order to put measures in place against wind and or rain/flooding!!

It must be a nightmare to evacuate places like that, I wonder where the residents go with other homes and hospitals full everywhere?

> people need to know

In my experience the met office always play it safe and issue warnings where there is the slightest chance of problems. Keep an eye on the warnings page, if there's nothing on there there is nothing to worry about :-)

Are you listening to Radio 1? :)  Radio 4 has been on about it all day including the mention of all the various flood warnings issued.
- By suejaw Date 23.11.12 18:05 UTC
Lol no I've not listened or seen the news today, this was solely from watching the ITV news at 10pm last night and felt they skirted around it. If they are now really banging home about it then good :-)

Oh and I don't listen to radio 1 either ;-)
- By LJS Date 24.11.12 07:40 UTC
If you listen to Radio 1 doesn't mean that you are not capable of keeping up to date on current affairs and the weather forecast :-)

Looks like is is going to start raining at about 11am and then through until 4am so going to take the dogs out in a bit as don't fancy getting soggy today !

Reminds me of when Lokismum came to stay during the summer and instead of lovely sunny walks we got caught in one of the many downpours we had over the summer and we got drenched !

We looked a right sight when we got back !

Setting off from Bristol to coventry for Pen's first shwo, so hope it isn't too bad, still dry here.
- By LJS Date 24.11.12 07:46 UTC
Good luck and hope you don't get caught too badly.

I have a few people onto project team that live in Bristol and they have had real fun and games this week travelling back from Oxford !

I'm sure you are right, LJS :) and it's just a question of learning to trust people that cannot even pull their trousers up far enough to cover their underpants :)

Or even news programmes that presenters accuse peers of being a paedofile , of course they are wearing suits :-)

Are we talking day time television now? :)
- By LJS Date 24.11.12 10:52 UTC
No that is trousers and a shirt the a dress showing ample cleavage !
- By Stooge Date 24.11.12 11:21 UTC
Exactly!  None of these transgressions could occur on Radio 4 :-D
- By suejaw Date 24.11.12 11:53 UTC
I have no idea if Radio 1 would do coverage of the weather, doubt it.. Don't recall the last time I listened to the radio being that my car one is bust... I get carried away with watching it on TV and have found myself loving the 10pm news!! Goodness I must be getting older if enjoy watching it...

I adore reading an watching weathe reports.. I recall back at school when we had to do a Q&A for careers and mine ended up I should be a weather reporter!! Lol

Yes they do talk about the weather alot :-)

Not the shipping forecast but no great loss as don't go to work via the sea !
