Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Quick q please - expired eye tests
- By Alfieshmalfie Date 18.11.12 16:32 UTC
Over the last couple of weeks Ive been trying to help a family find a fully health tested pup (they are looking for a girl whereas I only have a boy still available).  They have come across a KC litter that both Mum and Dad are owned by the KCAB but their eye certs expired in June (according to the KC website, the advert states that they have current eye certs).  Pups are currently 6 weeks old and 'apparently' the Mum and Dad have both 'just' been tested and are clear. There is hereditary cataract in the Sires Father so it is in the line.

Can I just confirm that these pups will not able to be registered under the KCAB scheme due to the eye cert not being in place when the litter was born?  It is one of the two required tests on the list of health tests for the breed.

I have advised him to walk away as there are so many litters out there currently fully and properly health tested that he neednt compromise.  I just need to make sure that I have got the right information as I cannot seem to find this written down anywhere.

Thank yoooooo :D

the kennel club recently announced/clarified that they accept an eye cert as current if it was issued within 18 months of the litters birth, even though the eye tests are refereed to as annual.

Also it is quite possible the most recent eye test has not been updated onto the system, as was the case with my most recent litter.

Here you go off the ABS document http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/download/1100/abshealthreqs.pdf

Quote (my bold):
"c) Eye testing - should be done under the KC/BVA/ISDS Eye
Scheme or the KC/AHT Scheme or the ECVO Scheme. (Eye
examinations should be repeated annually and should be
within 18 months of the date of birth of a litter).

Gonioscopy is a separate eye test (for predisposition to
glaucoma) and, where relevant, this test is only done once.

I would tell him to request to see a copy or the original certificates as the KC website doesn't update soon enough. In fact my bitch is eye tested under the FCI scheme in Newmarket Animal Health Trust so doesn't actually show up on the website at all as it isn't done via BVA. I also had my litter tested there.

Thank you all for your speedy replies, it turns out that there are no such certificates done recently on questioning the breeder further (so he fibbed), so they have pulled out.
