I will be getting my Spinone puppy in a few weeks time.
I will give the pup whatever the breeder has started the pup on.
I am a bit of old school at feeding-raw tripe and terrier meal.
Would this suit this kind of breed?
My lab and J/Russell look well on this diet.
Thank you

Raw I'd see no issue with, not sure I'd be feeding any puppy a terrier meal especially a large breed dog like the Spin... That's just me, have you spoken to the breeder about this to see what they think? I'd personally for a breed like this either do raw correctly or a very decent kibble with a bit of raw if you wanted to add that in.
Out of interest what raw food do you currently feed your terrier cross?
You'll probably find varying responses on this as to what is acceptable or not for a large breed puppy...
Is it the type of terrier meal that's 100% wheat?
I must say this wouldn't be my choice to feed a large breed puppy like a Spin - this is a breed that will need slow and careful growing so I'd want to make sure that every morsel of food was fulfilling a useful purpose.
I love tripe for dogs but again would rather see it fed as part of a balanced raw diet, including offal. I raw feed my HWV's but decided to keep a relatively high proportion of kibble in my pups diet til he was 12 months old. Not just for nutrition but partly because he was more settled and balanced with a little more bulk in his tummy! It was almost like a slow release food which stopped the manic puppy starvation conversations - you know the ones Pup: "Hey Mum I'm starving" Me: "Really? I just fed you an hour ago" Pup: "No, I think that must have been yesterday" Me: "But I've been watching the clock" Pup: "Well, it must have stopped I've got a huuuuuge hole in my tummy!"
I kept him on the Fish4Dogs that his breeder had him on but as soon as he got here I started to introduce raw so that he was on 50/50 by the end of the first week. He also ate chicken wings too. At 6 months I altered the balance to 75% raw and 25% kibble which I maintained until he was 12 months.
If you don't want to have a semi raw diet then I'd feed 75% good quality puppy kibble and just feed 25% tripe, but do talk to your breeder about it - he/she should be able to give you very good breed specific advice. Have fun with your pup - they are a lovely breed :)
I would talk it over with the breeder, but my own experience of HPR Gundogs I would agree you need a slow growth food. Also a good oil content to help with growing joints and tendons, large heavy active dogs need a higher oil content. Also look at the type of oil that is used. Some cheaper foods use oil that has been used in previous food processes, so not much food value left in it.
Mine have all been raised on Royal Canin and I have had no problems, I also feed some raw food, chicken wings, eggs, and veg.
I would tend to give an egg meal for breakfast, a couple of kibble meals during the day, and then a light supper in the evening.

Thank you for replying.
I did start my Lab and J/Russell off on a good kibble food mixed with raw tripe. Once they were over 12 months I fed them Laughing Dog 100% wholemeal organic biscuit. They do have chicken wings and lambs heart.
I will give the pup a good quality kibble to start off with. I will talk to the breeder to see what she feeds for her dogs. I get along well with her and she is very generous with her time.
I will be getting her on the 1st of Dec. I daresay daily routine that I have now will fade in to the background.
To the lady that asked about my Jack Russell-she weighs 10lbs and is 9ins tall.

- am with suejaw and would either go fully raw or a good quality kibble. DaB also made good points. Have a great time with your new baby a lovely breed

The breeder weans on pedigree puppy complete. She does add in raw trip at about 6 weeks.
The breeder mentioned that she does not feed a high protein food.
I daresay people will have different ideas on this subject.
