a friend has given me a part used bottle of this. It is not something I have used before. I know she didn't like it hence why the donation. It will not be any use for my dogs. Just wondering if people use it and what sort of coats will benefit? I don't want to start using it on clients dogs without a bit of research.

I used to use it on my Cavalier Henry, he had a habit of weeing all down his feathering and tummy, and a couple of squirts of this, heavily diluted of course, used to help him stay clean for the shows and reduced the staining.

I use it diluted in a plant spray bottle for dematting/detangling and find it works very well.  Good also for the heavy double coats, blast most of the water off the coat, dry until just damp, then spray with The Stuff and continue drying.  Watch the dead undercoat fly out!  It's effectively just another silicone spray, but I like it.

When it comes to showing is this one of the "products" not allowed to be used on the coats?

No, I don't believe so. It's just to help keep the coat in good condition and prevent staining between shows. It's not something that would be applied to the coat before entering the ring. Have heard good things about this produce when it comes to preventing staining on certain coat types.

As coat testing is still in abeyance it is a moot point, but theoretically yes it would be, as any silicone product leaves traces in the coat.  This is the sort of thing which made the whole coat testing furore take off.   The rule prohibit ANYTHING which alters the texture etc of the coat, and which stays in the coat.  People were amazed to find that standard grooming sprays and even conditioners breached the regulation .

I have used this on my older bitch as when one of our girls are in season my young boy likes to pee on her while she is weeing as he obviously couldn't wait until she had finished!! Now that I know he tends to do this I do not allow them out together when someone is beginning a season but I use it just in case and it helps protect her coat. She is not shown so it is not a problem there. It works wonders at repelling wee, dirt and water in general and gives a lovely feel to an older dogs coat.

I have now tried it on a couple of dogs and I have to say I like it. it gave a lovely feel to a poodle coat and made the knots so much easier to brush out. I also groom a scottie who goes to work with his owner at a local garage. His coat is always filthy and feels in very bad condition. The spray made it look much shinier and easier to brush out. He looked very nice when I had finished.

I am interested in the coat protecting properties. I know quite a few boys who would benefit from having their trousers protected. Also a couple of incontinent girls. When applied to the coat how long does the effect last? does it have to be reapplied daily?

Would this help prevent staining around the eyes for Bichons etc? I guess it would have to be applied very carefully to avoid getting it in the eyes. A lot of my customers ask what they can do to prevent tear stains.

Hmm, never thought of trying it on poodles. Most of the ones I do have reasonable or even good coats, but there is a white one I do who has a terribly soft cottony coat. Might give it a go if it might give it a bit more 'body'!

Probably depends on the cause and severity of the tear stains. I hear more about it being effective with urine staining than I do with tear and saliva staining. The only thing I would be cautious of with some breeds is that it might alter the texture of the coat. But as long as it's not show dogs, it should be fine to use.
