My westie is now 4 years old and has been fine with fireworks until this year, i have noticed that when he is in the garden and a firework goes off he shakes like mad and tries to get in as quick as he can, but last night we had loads of loud bangs going off and once he is inside he gets up onto the sofa with us and settles down right up close and he is fine, if a loud 1 goes off he looks up but doesn't react. Any one else's dog like this? Not that its a problem but just wondered why he reacts in the garden and not when he is inside.
Inside is his home and safety :-) Much like some dogs when inside go to their crate, or bed, or beneath a bed in the case of one of my dogs, for the feeling of safety and being enclosed!
Yes, mine will bark if they go off at mealtimes when the dogs are in the kitchen, but as soon as they are allowed back in the lounge after we've eaten, they curl up and totally ignore the bangs. :-)
Grumpy really was grumpy last night. He was just about to go outside for some business when a loud bang set him off. Went to a corner and stayed there all night, was very sad and withdrawn and panting like mad.
Because outside it is a lot louder and it isn't his inner sanctum. It's natural for a frightened animal to seek shelter.
Keep him indoors now until it's all stopped, and keep him busy if you can. Phoebe is barking at them when I'm not entertaining her, but if I'm playing with her she's ok. Everyone else has bones :-)
