Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Day 54 possible early labour
- By cb87 [gb] Date 29.10.12 00:02 UTC
My dam is on day 54 from first mating and is showing all the signs of early labour, she is panting and restless, cleaning her vulva and streaching out and also cleaning her whelping box, she is huge, twice the size she was with her last litter and that was a full term avarage size litter, if the pups are born this early, what are their chances? The pups can be seen kicking and moving around, she's still eating everything she can but she didn't stop eating with her last litter

I would be worried if it was one of mine.  Just a little too early for me, I have never had a live litter before day 56, and 7 days early is natural for my breed.  I once had a bitch whelp 10 days early, and the lungs weren't properly developed.

I hope your girl waits a while longer.

Hopefully she is one of the bitches who has a practice run before the real whelping.

If she is very big then this can cause the uterus to be irritable, have you seen/felt any contractions? Beware that an overly stretched uterus can be another cause of primary inertia because the the uterus can't contract effectively enough to expel the pups

I have to agree that a whelping this early may not produce live pups.

I hope she hangs on for you

Just to add that with a second litter, the bitch often looks a lot bigger than the first time, even if the litter is the same size or even smaller. Fingers crossed all will be well, have no experience here.

Mine nearly always have a small false alarm about 5 days before.

Well after a restless night she has calmed down for the moment, I hoe she holds on for another couple of days at least

Nice to hear that!  Fingers x'd for you that she waits a couple of days.  :-)
