Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Breed size affecting the size of puppy's development

Hi guys

I have a question.

I know breed size also determines the  puppy size at birth. Naturally, a large dog's puppy comes out from whelping bigger than a toy dog's puppy.
However, does it follow that during pregnancy, the process from zygote to blastocyst to embryo to fetus is also affected by the sizing of the breed? So for example, when a vet palpates a day 30 pregnant dam, the "marbles" will be bigger in a big dog and smaller in a smaller dog? That a fetus at the same stage will vary in size depending on breed size?

Also my dog is currently at day 29.
She's done with her food drama and she's eating fine again. She's more lazy nowadays and just lies down there either sleeping all afternoon or trying to cuddle.

She's a largish breed with a deeper chest and more dramatic tuck up than other dogs, does it also mean that she'll show easier than others?
This pregnancy was guided by the ovulation pads I bought online. It changed color at day 17/18, indicating LH surge, and we mated her day 20 (ovulation day) and 22 (day eggs are sperm friendly).

Thanks.

While I don't know the exact answer to your question I do know that in some large breeds where you might normally expect a large litter the pups at birth are often smaller than a similar sized breed which normally produces fewer pups per litter. Having said that I have also found that small pups can and often do overtake the largest pup in the litter in size at maturity.

I had a thought along similar lines...how easy is it to see a bitch 'developing' during the early stages of pregnancy, on a stocky breed like say a schnauzer or frenchie or suchlike. My breed is medium sized with a visable tuck up & I could tell at a few days before 4 weeks.
Some are quite surprised at the birth weight of my breed which is around 10-12 oz & can be surprised at how chunky they are as pups(5+weeks)
