Hi,

My girl has 2 healthy girls who are now 5 days old. It's a second litter and she's being a fab mum..... Me on the other hand is a nervous wreck! I think at 25 i'v developed my 1st grey hair!

We lost almost a whole litter last time with suspected herpes and am now almost expecting something to go wrong.

Pups are gaining weight daily and mum is feeding and drinking well but today both started crying on and off. Not the same cry as the boy we lost at 7 days, his was a pathetic and heartbreaking cry.... These 2 seem peeved off. Were thinking the whelping room may be to hot? What do you all keep yours at? Worried about them cooling down but don't want them getting dehydrated.

Thanks for any input :-)

If they are too warm then they will lie  apart from each other and stretched out, is there a cool area off the heat mat they and Mum can go and lie if needs be.

The area at the level of the whelping box I keep at 80F for the first 2 weeks and then gradually cool it down after that, herpes only takes hold when the pups are allowed to get chilled even for a short period.

Are they weeing and pooing normally as constipation can cause them to be uncomfortable and cry?

has Mum eaten anything different which could have caused colic in the pups?

Can't think of anything else

Just wanted to say congratulations! What wonderful news!

I used a heat pad so that the puppies could move on or off, and kept central heating on 24/7.

Thanks :-) Hmmmm we have lowered the heating by a couple of degrees as it was around 86. They have a largish whelping box and the heat pad is maybe 20% so plenty room off it and lola has a cooled down chammy cloth she can go o . They do seem happier today... This may seem silly but when do you consider them to be out of the danger period? I'm taking it day by bay but counting down till we get to 2 weeks!lol

As far as I can tell there toileting normlly but Lola is so good we hardly see a thing, though I do try and check there poos once a day. As for food Lola is thinking she's lady muck with her menu choice (chicken, salmon, tripe) so it's not her usual diet though nothing she hasn't had before.

I'm with them a day so will keep an eye and call the vet if they don't settle by this afternoon.... I'm thinking the 30-40g they put on over night is a good sign! Fatties!

Thanks for your help!
