Would any of you give your dogs peanuts(the salted ones) ?
My 18 month old GSD loves them, but I am worried about the salt content.
When I get a packet out he nearly gets onto my lap, drooling ,I feel mean if I do not give him any but will be strong if they are not good for him !!!!

The amount of salt makes these a no no in my book PLUS I really wouldn't want to reward that kind of attention from the dogs but unsalted peanuts aren't really harmful as such and mine race to pick up any that get dropped when I fill the bird feeders.  Peanut butter of course gets used quite commonly as a treat but it's best to use an unsalted and unsweetened variety.  Some other nuts are a problem though so you might need to check the lists for which ones (macadamia is one that I recall...)

I occasionally give my dogs peanuts when I have some and they love them.Like most things everything in moderation.

I know someone in our local park throws peanuts on the paths in winter - I presume it is for the birds but my Lola goes from patch to patch hoovering them up!

Peanuts are not toxic to dogs, however with any high fat or salty food moderation is the key, it is not something I would give to a dog myself, although if they got to the odd handful I would not panic,  high fat contents which peanuts have can cause pancreatitis and the salt can affect sodium levels if given as regular treats.

So as long as not a weekly or even monthly treat I guess the odd few do no harm, but I'd offer him something else next time he sits on your lap for some peanuts or just give him one if you can't say no to him, no doubt he dribbles all over you for one. :-D

Thanks for info,Yes he does dribble & I dont think that I am encouraging bad behaviour by giving him a odd treat of something that he shows a interest in ,he is not a great feeder so for him to show that he likes something is such a change ,AS you say its not like I am giving him a packet every day ,just a treat now & again . Will have to see if I can find another treat that he can have .

Mine have snaffled a few from time to time - they come out again whole!

I had a dog who would take monkey nuts out of the shells and eat them!

She could also shell hazel, brazil and walnuts.

Walnuts were a bit of a challenge for her and kept her entertained for hours!

Walnuts,That took me back some years,One of our old sheps would pinch the odd one from nut bowl on the coffee table when they were put out xmas time,Times that I found nut shell bits stuck to bottom of my slippers,he left all other nuts just the walnuts .

My goldie used to love them if she got anywhere near.  I'd suck the salt off for her and she only had the occasional one or out of the shell.

the things we do

Fruit trees have virtually had nothing this year and the dogs have eaten the small amount of hazelnuts, no problem husking and then shelling them.
