My SBT has his first seizure that we know of in December last year, he was put on Epiphen in January after he had 3 in 1 day.  He had blood tests and everything came back clear so was diagnosed with epilepsy.  He didn't have his next Grand Mal that we know of until July.  He had a petit mal in Aug, 2 grand mals in September and has just last week had a cluster of 2 grand mals with a petit mal in between. After his second grand mal in September he was put on Libromide to take in conjunction with his Epiphen which the vet increased the dosage of last week after his cluster.

I have started researching on the internet to see if there is anything else I can do for him and have come across there could be a link with "rosemary" and seizures which I alarmingly discovered was in his food last night.  Has anyone else heard of this, since it appears to be in an awful lot of dogfoods?  I am now in a dilema, do I change his food if so what do I feed him?  I would be grateful of any help or advice from anyone.  It is such a heartbreaking thing to have to go through with your pet and I fear that if we do not get it under control soon he could suffer brain damage.  He is almost 4 and such a happy little dog, I don't want this horrible condition to change that.

He also has itchy skin and is on medrone v albeit a small dose so I need to be careful what I feed him in case it agrivates his skin.

Sorry to hear about your dog Julie. This site's a mine of information and there's a section on feeding for epileptic dogs on there.

Some dogs do well with Vivitonin added to the Epiphen and Libromide. It works by improving the circulation and can sometimes help with any damage to the frontal lobes. It's also thought to inhibit seizures so might be worth a try if your vet thinks so.

Sorry to hear about your dog, it's so upsetting, I lost my SBT earlier this year due to a brain tumour that caused seizures.
I have come across the suggestion that rosemary and other herbs can be a factor in seizures, so have most of the dog food companies and they process the herbs to remove the element thats thought to be the cause.
You can get in touch with the food company and ask though, most are very helpful.

I thought that rosemary oil was often used as a preservative in complete foods. How is the 'element' that is thought to possibly be the cause removed from the oil? Just curious.  I had never heard of a link between epilepsy and rosemary, so I have learned something today.

I agree that if there is any doubt, a home prepared diet would be the safest way to go.

Haven't a clue how it's removed CB, I just know most of them do, perhaps a heat or chemical process.
