I am looking for suggestions of a dog coat for a toy breed.
Must be comfortable so that she will wear it, and waterproof/warm.
I had hoped to change to using a Puppia harness but I assume a coat and harness won't go together ?

I have working cockers who get very wet and cold some days when out working, I always carry an "Equafleece" coat for them on exceptional wet days, no matter how wet they are at lunch time I put a coat on them, they warm up quickly and dry off while wearing these coats. They are a fleece product and the fabric breaths and allows moisture to escape, they also keep the weather out! I find the polo neck design is best for warmth as the neck and chest is well covered (and one less strap) while the rest of the coat wraps itself around the dog for a nice cosy and snug fit.
These are not "designer" type coats but very usefull and practical, they also wash and dry very quickly
I have compared them with other coats/rugs which may have a much stiffer type of outer fabric and do not always cover so much of the body, although these types may keep the dog warm the dog stays wet !
Equafleece coats are worth every penny and last for years.
same here, its the working cockers i have, wee man, would they have those fleeces for pups as well?

Have a look on their site and see how small they make the coats, I'm not sure at the moment it depends on the size of your pups!
I've just looked on their site and 12" is the smallest !!
yeah thx, just had a look and they do for pups, thx

Thank you for the recommendation for the Equafleece as I have a 14 year old who has never needed a coat, but may do at some stage :)

Yes I have a polo equafleece for my pom x chi so quite small. Fits well keeps her warm and dry unless a real downpour.

another recommendation for Equafleece here--my three boys actually queue up to get theirs on after a winter swim, they love snuggling in them. The only time I've ever had one develop holes was when my oldest boy wore his for the first time and decided to customise it. The only thing I would say is wait to see them at a show--save on postage and get a coat that fits really well, my measurement skills were not as accurate as theirs

Weeman, it's for 2 cockers I'm needing too but mine have full, show coats!!Eek! Hence the need to keep them as dry as possible on walks as it takes them ages to dry. I'm looking for a waterproof suit to keep most of the water off rather than keep them warm and I don't intend to let them submerge!!lol. Famous last words!

You mean you have cockers that don't get wet dirty or muddy ! OH the poor things !! :)
Happy days.

my toy breeds also wear equafleece and their harnesses, dog games fleece ones, fit over comfortably. Equafleece are waterproof and don't restrict the dogs movement at all, infact my dogs often wear theirs at the beginning of an agility training session in the winter

My cockers get very wet and muddy the majority of the time. I do like the Hurtta waterproofs but if they are doing the usual free running, they still lie in the muddy puddles and I find them even worse as the coat fills up with water and can't escape! The do help protect against some of the woodland attaching to the coats though.
Snug fitting equafleece coats are better but they can mat under the legs.
Most of the time I just can't be bothered with putting them on and put up with 4 soggy dogs on the return. I just dream of coming back with a clean dry dog once in a while!

Two of mine have full fleece PJs from here:
http://www.moggztoggz.com/She also makes jumpers, snoods and toys and all the profits go to Greyhound Gap rescue, so even better :-) It's top quality stuff - Remy adores his PJs and he'll be getting a new set soon too :-)

No, Weeman, I TRYING to stop them getting wet and muddy!!!lol It's not worked so far.lol See my problem is, my cockers live with much easier(coatwise) breeds so I am always moaning about the cockers. They are the noisiest. They are the wettest. They are the smelliest.....etc(my list goes on!!). So, we decided that my 2 oldest could walk the 2 cockers down the farm road instead of me taking them through the woods with the rest of the dogs. That way, they won't drive me nuts barking in the car or on the walk and they won't get dirty and soaked(as they will stay on lead and on a path).
I'm doing all this cos I prefer my cockers to have a semi-long coat. I hate the texture of a clipped cocker!
And anyway Weeman, you are not allowed to comment!! You have working cockers which are practically another breed. If I was talking about workers, I wouldn't be bothered about them getting soaked either!!They dry faster than my springer!lol. I will send my 2 show cockers to you for a month and you'll see what I mean. They bring the forrest home with them, literally. This is why when I get calls about pups and people say they don't mind if it's working or show lines, It drives me nuts. It's honestly like 2 different breeds!

Hi cracar, so your cockers are human after all !! Great fun isn't it, my first 3 cockers were the show type, never cliped just well groomed and in the winter they would carry huge snowballs on their trousers untill they could move no longer ! Yes I know what you mean about almost 2 different breeds. No thank you I would not like your 2 for a month with the knots and brambles that would come home, I much preffer the working type with their shorter coats and ears, however a well cared for show type is very beautifull ! Have fun :)

Maybe not designer, but popular with "proper" dog people! :-) :-)
Someone with working breeds and agility dogs, who also does competitive obedience, has had 2 toy pups from me. When collecting said pups, an equafleece coat was produced for the dogs, and the polo neck looked lovely and secure on them.
I have since received photographs of these tiny tots playing in the water at the seaside with BC's and a Rottie! There's nothing as nice as seeing a toy getting along fine with other breeds, and being allowed to act like dogs. However, due to the size they would chill quickly, so this type of coat is ideal for them. (And I don't let them go to people who think they need dresses!)

Jean,
Your comment that there is nothing nicer than seeing toy breeds getting along with large dogs and being allowed to act like proper dogs is music to my ears.
I love it when my dogs are in a large group of all shapes and sizes of dogs at the park!
however I must add that I am constantly scanning the horizon just incase a hooligan interupts the happy band of dogs as being so small they could be seriously injured by an over boisterous larger breed.
Also I would echo that equafleece are the coat of choice within agility circles

Jeansw can I have one of your pups please :) ? That's exactly how my pomx chi is. She lives with my gsd and flattie doesn't get dressed up except her equafleece runs with my dog walkers dogs in enclosed field all breeds and also walks shock horror along the road beside me on her lead. She is not part of the contents of my handbag lol

You would have laughed if you had seen some of mine walking the beach in single file when I decided to take a gang of dogs with me down to the caravan. Bear in mind that I insist on decent recall. So, no leads, and a 6 mile stretch of beach (no I don't walk it all!) :-)
In the front - Cassie, far too big for the breed Bearded Collie, so think Shetland Pony. Followed by much smaller normal sized Border Collie, followed by very large Yorkshire Terrier - much too big for the breed, but followed by normal Yorkie, followed by a Chihuahua, followed by a much too small Chi.
It's normal for my lot to keep close to each other, so I didn't think it was unusual. Until I realised that the spectators were growing in number. Then I heard a guy say, bloody hell, they're in size order!! :-) :-) I nearly wet myself when I looked at them through a strangers eyes! It looked hilarious.
Can I ask which coat you were referring to ?
The thread is a bit jiggled since it was reposted by admin.
Thanks.

equafleece coats

Equafleece fan here too :)

My Cavaliers have nice little fleecy coats from 'coats@fedaye' at least that what the coat label says. They go to some of the champ shows, and I think they also have a website. Good prices, lots of choice, and so far we are happy with them!

My whippet is in her Equafleece as we speak, drying off having been out in this horrid, horrid rain!
