Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Protein loss

I have been reccommended by my sister to use this site, I hope someone can help me with my questions.
I have a nine year old female golden retriever, she has recently lost weight, approx a stone over the last couple of months. A urine test has proved positive with protein, level 2 I believe. There are no signs of white cell or blood, which I believe is a good sign. We are going to have a full set of bloods done in the next week.

My question is: Is there an alternative food/supplement which will give her back some protein that will slow down or help her weight loss.

I understand that the problem is linked directly to the kidneys, until the bloods are done no positive results are known.
I would be ever so grateful for any feedback or information.

Thank-you
Georgina

I so sorry to hear of the trouble you have with your elderly bitch, and even more sorry that I am unable to help. I don't think you can replace any lost protein she may have lost as I would have thought that the problem lay within her ability to deal with her food properly, and think you would be better to wait until the rest of the blood tests are done. There should be no harm in giving her a few extra protein high foods in addition to her normal food, chicken, cheese or eggs, but I would not over do it. I know it is hard to wait for the results but I'm sure that is best. Hope the results are conclusive and you will soon be dealing with the problem. thinking of you. Ja:)kie

If you contact me privately (click on my name at top for email address) I will send you a sample diet for kidney failure just in case your bitch is unlucky enough to suffer from this, then you can study it and discuss it with your vet when you have the rest of the results.
