Just a wee question and bit of advice.. i know puppies play and bite one another, but is it normal for them to get a bit agressive with1 another, they are 4 weeks old and over the last cpl a days ive notice that the growling and bitting is a lot more than just playing, i was actually alarmed a bit, is this normal with littermates?

They can get very rough indeed, but when one yelps and then goes off in a huff the offender soon realises he looses a playmate.  Mum will sometimes intervene if things get too heated.

Yeah mum has had to step in, and it seems to be the biggest pup which is female, but the other aswell, just a bit alarmed as they are only 4 weeks old. But again thx

That's perfectly normal, and indeed essential if they're to learn how to moderate their play. They can't learn gentleness without being too rough and suffering the consequences.

I have just bred my first litter which are now 6 weeks old.  I was also quite shocked at how rough they play with each other and have had to stop myself from breaking it up when the squealing starts.  However, it is a big learning curve for them and you need to let them get on with it. You do get used to the noise eventually!

Hehe, I love that bit.  Watching them marching around, strutting their stuff and thinking they are the boss of the world and then mum comes in and squashes her down with one paw!! It's always a bitch that is the bossyboots!!lol  I remember when puppy owners were visiting and they witnesses a squabble(over a leaf!) and they were horrified.  I remember think, gosh, that wasn't even that bad!!

Pups learning about this behaviour is why it is  so important that they have access to litter mates and mum/any other adults for as long as possible it teaches them manners for later in life.

Provided there is no serious injury[has been rare mention on here of pups getting into serious fights] I would let them sort it out themselves.

Enjoy, puppy antics are better than watching TV

My litter are now 8wks old and they also play rough. Is it normal to have little scabs on the back of the neck from puppy bites?
2 of my litter have and recently  my friends litter had them as well. I remember years ago getting a spaniel puppy and the vet said that some scabby bits on her were puppy bites.

Very rarely had any signs of that except on an ear, as mine have very thick coats.
