I have a 6 month old pup, 3 weeks ago she was being fed on Hills puppy dry food and was advised she needed to loose weight.
So I have put her on Hills adult and cut the amount she has right back and only 2 meals. The weight is coming of but very slowly and she Is looking for food constantly.

Dose any one think if I feed say half the amount of biscuit and with less protein content than Hills and top up with raw meat this will be less calories and the meat will help make her feel less hungry.

Any advise on feeding to lose weight will be appreciated.

Would say 10gm of beef mince have less fat content than 10gm of Hills complete meal?

Thanks

A 6 month old puppy is still growing and needs top quality food and protein to grow strong muscles etc, just in the right quantities.

Simply reducing intake to an appropriate amount and allowing growth to take care of the excess weight.

If pup is seriously overweight then slow weight loss is appropriate, or no actual weight loss but growing into his weight.

Please don't reduce the protein intake, just the volume of food.

I agree with Brainless - keep your pup on Puppy food.  What breed is she?  I have gundogs and keep them on puppy food until they are 12 months old

Who told you she needed to lose weight?  I'm not doubting the advice but some breeds can look a little pudgy as pups and it also depends on the time of day too, I've seen pups go from round to skinny in just one day!!

Minor adjustments will always be needed with youngsters and in my experience dogs can be 2 years or more before they settle into a fixed meal amount.  However, as long as you don't allow things to go too far then it's possible to reduce intake by 10 or 15 grams per meal to make the changes you need, and it's better to make the changes fairly slowly.  Incidentally, do you weigh every meal?  It's very easy to overfeed if you guess :)

it may not be her meals you are feeding her putting the weight on it could be all the little bits of treats etc that could be putting the weight on her if you are feeding her treats.
not saying that you are but we had a lady on another board her dog would not eat
his proper meals and he was still putting weight on and she did not understand why
until we asked what else does he get, well he got this and that and the other so he may not
of been eating all of his proper meals as he we being fed lots of treats inbetween meals

I too agree, stick to the food you are using and cut the amount down, some puppies do put on more weight than others but I would not be too worried about the weight unless a vet has advised you to reduce it. Podgy pups are to some extent normal and will start to loose weight as they mature, just watch the extras and use the food from her meals for training purposes. You could try using junior soon, change it over slowly.

Some puppies go out before they go up !!! I have had a few that have looked quite podgy then they have had a sudden growing spirt and suddenly look a lot slimmer.
Ask your breeder what is normal for their lines.
