Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Dog Fish oil vs Human?
- By dollface Date 24.09.12 22:48 UTC
Was wondering instead of buying dog fish oil to buy people fish oil instead. I think maybe the people
stuff is a lot more safely handled ect then dog stuff.

What is your feeling on this?

If so not sure exactly how much to give? Right now I am using Natures Logic and Moose gets 4 teaspoons and the bostons get 1 teaspoon.
plus I picked up some herring from the metro so when I give them that I don't bother giving the fish oil.

Also checking out the link on Krill (actually just listening to it now)- would that be the better option?

All these decisions- prob making things more complicated then I need to- hmmm

Thank you :-)

There's no reason to use dog-fish-oil instead of human:  Human grade is fine.

Just to say though, that salmon oil is better than more general 'fish oil' - salmon oil is higher in DHA and other goodies than other fish oils are.  So if you can find pure salmon oil, that's even better.

In theory I can't see why fish oils for human use would be significantly better than that produced for dogs.

One of my dogs has recently been diagnosed with Symmetrical Lupoid Onchodystrophy (a nail problem!) and the vet has given him Viacutan Plus which is an essential fatty acid supplement - I'd not heard of it before but it seems to be quite widely used and I've been very impressed with it.  Might be worth a look if it's available over there :)  The recommended dose is 1-2 pump strokes/10kg bodyweight once daily (each pump stroke contains 0.6ml)

My dogs are raw fed too and whilst I'm happy that a balanced diet should provide everything a healthy dog needs none of mine are keen on raw fish and I also don't have a regular supplier which would enable me to get them properly used to eating it.  I generally use salmon oil from Fish4Dogs in addition to one meal per week of fish based kibble with tinned sardines and salmon mouses - Fish Fridays!!

The reason why I figure it would be better is because people stuff is handled better so to speak- with people food it def suppose to follow
a certain guideline where with animals not so much.

I too am feeding the raw- that's the only thing I have added in was the fish oil- unless of course I am giving them fish. Just picked up 1 pound
fish patties salmon so prob try that tonight with their food instead of adding the oil. Or should the oil still be added?

I usually skip the oil if I've fed them oily fish.  Saves on the capsules.

Also, those using salmon oil - contact with oxygen is said to degenerate the oil so it won't have the health advantages you need.  Which is why capsules are better than using a big bottle of oil.
