Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / JWB and disgusting teeth?
- By OwnedbyaBC [gb] Date 19.09.12 00:38 UTC
I did have my lot on all different food (one puts weight on if she smells food, one is too busy to eat and one only does well on grain free - most foods make him itch/chew his feet) but I managed to get them all on JWB Lamb and Vegetable - everyone ate it and was doing well..

BUT

I have noticed their teeth are getting stained/plaqued up and all 3 now have dog breath which they didn't have before. I have them on plaque off, and only the busy one has wet food, so I can only blame the kibble? They have constant access to and use nylabones and antlers as well as chicken wings/thighs/legs a couple of times a week. They did not have manky teeth before (my oldest is 5) but even the youngster at 1yr has teeth I'm ashamed of. Their teeth are still in the early stages of getting disgusting but I wondered if anyone else had problems with JWB and teeth? I am going to back to what I fed before I think with 3 different brands which is a pain in the butt and a shame.

What else do you do with their teeth , any bones or chews given as feeding kibble alone especially if fed moist will not help clean their teeth without cleaning them yourself.

I agree, it is the kibble, you have a medium sized breed like myself and probably buy for the small/medium breed dog which is the correct balance for our dogs, however the kibble itself is not big enough to scrape the teeth as being eaten, the large breed dogs are ok as their food is bigger and the small probably are too in having smaller teeth.

If your dog does not use knuckle bones etc to clean their teeth they lose out and need to keep going to the vet to have their teeth done.

I part BARF feed too, so my girl is ok, but what I did recommend to a friend whose dog got the runs with many food including a lot of BARF was to just get a cheap Tesco/Sainsbury's/Asda complete food which is a much larger kibble and have that for breakfast which cleans the teeth and the more expensive dry kibble for evenings, this worked really well and the dog hasn't needed the vet clean since.

However whether your dog will be able to eat that I don't know? But, worth a try along with a good old knuckle bone, although I know some dogs aren't even keen on bone chewing............

My Yankee has always been fed on JWB and has only just needed his first teeth cleaning at 10 years old. I used to brush their teeth weekly, but now I use that Petzlife oral spray. My nearly 8 year old Cavalier is also on it and hasn't yet needed her teeth done. But of course these are smaller breeds than your BCs so perhaps the kibble is large enough to help scrape the teeth somewhat. The Yankee does sometimes have whiffy breath but I suspect the disgusting scavenging habit more than the kibble....

They have antlers, nylabones, bones and raw chicken wings and quarters which is the exact same as they've always done. The only change to the diet is this kibble. The kibble pieces are larger then previous kibble and none
of my 3 are gulpers. I think it is only the Veg ones that cause this issue as
the busy youngster has had 'normal' jwb before and been fine, it was one of the reasons we switched..!

We also feed JWB veg and lamb (once a week) and have never had issues with teeth.

They don't have tea or anything else like that fluid wise ?

My dogs are raw fed now and teeth have improved greatly, but two of my boys are literally bone idle and won't use them, so I treat them with Dentasure . I know this is going to sound like one of those awful ads, but I have been very impressed with the results even used on an occasional (twice weekly basis), to the extent that my vet had recommended a scale and polish for one boy as a matter of urgency and even he couldn't believe the difference.

My lot get a Dentastix at bed time, I found giving them 1/2 a large breed one that had been in the fridge first made it last longer other wise it was just a quick chew and swallow with the one designed for their size.

I am interested in trying Dentasure - is it availlable in the UK? My google search yielded information from the US only.
- By JAY15 [gb] Date 19.09.12 11:23 UTC
As far as I know you'd have to order it, they do ship abroad although I had it mailed to my mother's NY address and picked it up while I was over there. I've just emailed them to find out whether they have a UK outlet and will keep you posted.

I'm interested too!  Fingers x'd
- By JAY15 [gb] Date 19.09.12 11:36 UTC
LOL JeanSW--I will post on here when I get an answer. I don't know if this is practical for the rest of you, but I have a brother who is currently working in Germany, goes back to the US every two months or so and is in London regularly, so if people are interested we could try a collective order and save a bit on postage :-).

Ooh, what's Dentasure?
- By JAY15 [gb] Date 19.09.12 12:57 UTC
Dentasure is a spray or gel, is made from grapefruit seed extract and is an alcohol free version of Petzlife as far as I can see :-).

I tried Plaque off with very little result but in my experience Dentasure lives up to the hype :-)

What about trying Fish4dogs in teh large kibble size.

It is Fish and Potatoe (I think, best check) so should suit your grain intollerant boy (assuming he's OK with fish).

Certainly when mine have it (I mix it with their Arden Grange), they have to crunch the kibble.

Oh ok, thanks. I tried Plaque off without much luck. Petzlife isn't bad, but I'm too softhearted to withhold water for 30 minutes twice day or whatever it says. Also I'm so dopey I'd forget to put the bowls down again if I did! :-p Aquadent worked quite well but was horribly expensive.

I shall give Fish4Dogs a go, on paper there is nothing in it I know he reacts to, but if
it doesn't suit him he can go back to Orijen and Acana.

That's really kind.  If you do get an order together, I'll try a gel and a spray.  But you would have to let me know what it costs in english, as I don't do dollars!  :-)
- By JAY15 [gb] Date 19.09.12 21:39 UTC
JeanSW, my last order inc postage to NY (for two bottles) came to $46.92 (£28.92), which is a lot cheaper than Petzlife. I bought these in April and still have loads left. I was planning to get an order in for around Christmas when I know my brother will be over there, but will find out if he is going sooner--apparently I have just missed him, he is on his way back now :(. If you can hang on till then I will be happy to get the order together
- By JeanSW Date 19.09.12 21:45 UTC
Smashing!  :-)

Yes, willing to pay that sort of money.  I wasted enough on stuff that didn't work.  Nearer Christmas I'm happy to pay up front.

Thank you.
