Topic Dog Boards / Health / Prob dumb question- salmonella?
- By dollface Date 07.09.12 11:12 UTC
This may sound like a stupid question but hubby was asking me so thought I'd ask on here cause I really do not no

After my dogs eat (raw diet) I brush their teeth shortly there after- do to the fact the food is ground up-
prepackaged cause we haven't started making our own.

Do we have to worry about salmonella on the tooth brush, or if they give us kisses?

They chew on their bones sometimes after eating so do we have to worry about that as well?

Thank you :-)

I think you're more likely to get salmonella from the meat making contact with the floor or work surfaces than from your dogs themselves.

As long as they don't move it out of the bowl, and you are washing the bowls well then you should be ok.  Many people raw feed their dogs outdoors so they don't need to worry about this.

I think brushing their teeth is a bit overkill (!) but I'm sure it won't do them harm.  You could just make sure they have a well-stuffed kong, Nylabones or real bones to eat, so their teeth get cleaned naturally.

You don't need to 'make' their food - just add a bone into the equation.  Have a look at the K9 Natural freeze dried food - they recommend feeding it for one meal a day and a Raw Meaty Bone for the other meal.  You could do the same, with whatever premade raw food you use.

It depends on how the food has been handled both before and after you get it. Believe you are outside the UK so it would depend on how meat for animal consumption is handled in your country, it used to be practice to use meat unsuitable for human consumption (because it was not fresh) after placing it into a chemical solution to stop the deterioration and kill contamination but that may no longer be allowed in the UK and may not have ever been allowed in your country.

So providing that you use normal hygiene when handling the dogs food and making sure any utensil, surface and your hands are suitable washed then there should be no risk to you or your family but agree teeth cleaning is a bit OTT. If the meat has been treated I would be more worried about that and it is one of the reasons I do not raw feed as I can't afford to feed with human meat and would not use anything else.

So far I am getting my raw from this company http://www.mountaindogfood.com/ we have a couple different ones here.

I feed them inside its starting to get a lil chilly and soon am sure will have snow lol Planning on next summer to get some
raw bones for them to chew on- just don't want that in the house. Reason why I brush their teeth, plus Junior has had dental work done twice- pricey!

Very careful on the cleanup I pull everything out b4 hand- I use lysol wipes and cleaner with bleach in it- always wipe down the counter top ect
and all dishes get rinsed under hot water and straight into the dishwasher. B4 I put he raw food container in the fridge I also wipe that down with
viniger just to make sure its clean- prob over kill but rather be safe then sorry.
