Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Fish question?
- By dollface Date 02.09.12 19:08 UTC
Since I do have my dogs on raw and I have some pickerel/walleye fish in my freezer can
I just feed that to them raw? Do I have to worry about the bones?

Its already filleted bought it at Costco awhile back and well have not cooked it up as of yet, def would still have bones in it. Was thinking what a great way
to give them some Omega- fresh fish persua.

How long could I have it in my fridge before making sure its all eaten up?

Thank you :-)

i wouldnt feed fish i knew had bones in,myself, others may know better?I only buy minced raw as i feel it s safer.Could you cook it and remove the bones?I know we re supposed to be feeding raw,but ive never heard if raw fish bones are safe ,or not, like meat bones are,so Id rather not risk it,and I also feed canned fish, which is cooked(but healthy?)

I would absolutely feed fish with bones and frequently do.  I suppose it is possible for a dog to get a bone stuck - but it hasn't happened to me yet - they get chomped up and swallowed.  I am particularly keen on feeding fish heads, rather than just the white meat as the heads are where the nutrition is.

I think there are pluses and minuses to all the approaches - if you feed minced then you do obviate the risk of getting a bone stuck.  But then you also miss out on the physical & mental stimulation of crunching the bones up - and of course the tooth-cleaning benefits, and the food being eaten more slowly.

What kind of fish heads would I feed, do I cut it up or just give it whole?
Can I just go to my local super market and feed those heads?

Any fish heads you can get I would say.  Oily fish probably slightly better.  I would either get large ones that can be easily held down by paws - or small ones that can just be crunched up.  Middle sized ones are tricky as they are a bit slippy and it's difficult for a dog to get a good purchase on them.

I feed whole sardines frozen when i can get them - cuts down on the fish smell and the dogs love eating them in the garden on a summer evening!
