Topic Dog Boards / General / My dog stares at me..

She sits on the sofa and stares at me, if she's awake and not occupied with her usual doggie things, eating, playing, chewing etc she is staring at me.  She is my dog, petted on me and 'in love' with me as my family put it, she follows me everywhere but does love my husband too.  She is never left alone as there is always somebody here, so she can't be afraid of me leaving her.  Anybody have any idea what the staring is about?  She's not looking out or feed, she should be content and will eventually relax and sleep but not until she has stared me out for ages.  So what's it all about?

Is she hoping for a seat on the sofa?

Just over two months ago, I started going to one-to-one agility lessons with my younger dog (6yrs old). From the first time we went, on arriving home he would be exhausted for the rest of the day, but awake and staring at me constantly, just like you describe. I wasn't sure why either - it was like he had a new respect for me, or perhaps hoping we were going to do some more!

11 lessons later he doesn't do it, and is much less exhausted (we are both a lot fitter, lol) but if I put up some weave poles in the park he is instantly in working mode and would practice all day if I let him.

She's watching to see what you're going to do next - she doesn't want to be left behind. Basically she's on the alert and not relaxed.

Totally agree.  Waiting for the next brilliant thing she can do for you!!lol
I have one the same but she's even more weird.  She can sense me looking at her when she's sleeping.  No joke.  She will be upside down snoring on the other sofa and I will look over at her and maybe think how sweet she is and she instantly starts wagging her tail and looks round at me.  There is no way she could see me looking or anything as her head is round the opposite way. Now, how does she do that?

Thank you for all your replies, now I am glancing at her to see if her staring is in anticipation and maybe you are right jeangenie as she looks like she is ready to go at any second.  My family say she is afraid of missing anything as she doesn't miss a beat around the house and is into everything, if I am clearing out a drawer her head is in it too.  When she arrived with us I wasn't very well for a few months and I suppose she sensed she really was needed and I've always called her my therapy dog, as well as all the other things she gets called which aren't so complementary!  Funny you should say that Cracar as she also knows when I smile at her!  Some days I just think I need to get out more LOL.

one of my girls does this. She sits and stares at me for so long that she often nods off then wakes with a jump when she collapses in a heap on the floor. OH says she is trying to read my mind.

lol cracar, my puppy is exactly the same. I take one look over my shoulder to see if she is still fast asleep and those eyes fly open instantly. I have to remind myself not to do it because I want her to have her beauty sleep :-)
