Topic Dog Boards / General / Braided or woven leather leads
- By parrysite [gb] Date 22.08.12 11:38 UTC
Hi All,

I was at a dog show on Sunday and saw a gentleman with a gorgeous black pointer. He had a braided leather slip lead on it. It was like rolled leather but braided.

I cannot find them anywhere but it was a really nice lead. What I am looking for is a leather lead in a similar braided style but I prefer to use a double-ended lead with the d-rings up so that I can adjust the length of it. I currently use the halti training lead but it is getting a bit tatty.

I have searched the internet high and low and I just can't find them.

Any suggestions?

Josh

Is this the kind of thing you're looking for.

I must admit they do look gorgeous.

It was similar to those but it was all one colour, a lovely tan colour. I will send them an email to see prices, I'm guessing kangaroo leather is going to be expensive!!

any leather made well tends to be expensive.

If I look after it well, though I'm supposing it will last as long as Nando will? I may have to settle for just a collar though if the cost is silly money.

I've recently had one made in white by essenjay mentioned above. It's a 5mm show set and was £46.50 which I don't think is expensive, I've had the black rolled leather ones for about 14 years and they're still in excellent condition. Essenjay are at the majority of Ch shows, you'll see Sharon generally sitting outside working with leather.

A friend has mentioned discover dogs, are they likely to be there?
- By Henri3402 [gb] Date 22.08.12 14:44 UTC
Sorry no idea, why not send her an e mail and ask.

Just been in touch and sadly they don't make the training leads in the plaited style. Shame as it was a lovely lead.

I have the single clip version of those leads. They really are lovely soft leads and the quality is superb,I dont buy leads or collars from anywhere else but Petneeds.

A good leather lead will last the lifetime of at least 3 dogs. :) My oldest leads date back to the early 80s. (And STILL I spend lots of money on more at Crufts every year. I'm buying leads like other women buy shoes.)

I buy leads and shoes...

Straight leather fetish then, huh! ;)

Sadly these aren't what I was looking at. Beautiful leads but I'm dead set on the type I saw at the dog show!

This is the closest I can find to what I was looking at, however I still can't find the same style of leather in a 'training'/police style multiway lead.

Any ideas?

According to the manufacturer, they're not suitable for larger breeds :((

Josh,  that link doesn't work - can you try again?
- By MsTemeraire Date 24.08.12 00:13 UTC
Just musing here.... but maybe there's a reason why they aren't made by the established leather lead makers, especially for larger dogs?  The thinner leather strips needed to create a braid might be more prone to damage or stress, and if they split or snapped then the whole lead could unravel and break.
Just a thought.
- By Goldmali Date 24.08.12 07:54 UTC
I suppose a lot depends on how good the dog is on the lead and how much it matters that the lead NEVER can break. (That should be matters a LOT  suppose!!)  I often think it's amazing at shows were we all show our extremely strong Belgians on very thin leather leads with equally thin collars -the exact same leads I use for my Papillons for every day walking. It works fine as there is no pulling but I wouldn't want to use them at home. Also it is NOT comfortable to use a thin lead for a big dog, for your hands. I'd imagine a braided lead would also be uncomfortable.
- By theemx [gb] Date 24.08.12 16:16 UTC
I don't think you can make that length of lead that will safely hold a bigger dog for training/walking outdoors in a multiway/police style, firstly because you would need to put in joins which would need to be really thin and delicately done or they would ruin the look of the braiding, and secondly because each point where you would put a ring to adjust the length of the lead, you would either have to convert back to a flat style, or work the ring onto some of the strands of the braid and then any pressure on them would pull the braid out of shape and risk breaking.

It certainly isn't something I would consider making, because I cannot envisage a way of making it safe (and I have been working with leather for nearly ten years now).
- By parrysite [gb] Date 24.08.12 20:42 UTC
Theemx- do you have a website for your leather goods? I did think it was a bit of an ask to have it braided and multiway. I just don't like the slip leads for Nando, he doesn't pull and is well behaved on a lead but he will lunge (Not viciously... just to do a playbow) at other dogs in a greeting manner.

http://store.landofpuregold.com/p-leads.htm?gclid=CI_suuKYgbICFYcKfAodGE8ARA have a look at these Josh not cheap and not uk but look rather nice
- By Brainless [gb] Date 24.08.12 22:23 UTC
Now those would be nice as show leads in the half inch.
- By parrysite [gb] Date 24.08.12 22:58 UTC
Those are brill. Don't like the multi-colour ones but the ones with the retrievers wearing them in one collar are lovely.
- By furriefriends Date 25.08.12 14:25 UTC
wonder if you contact them they would post to uk ?
