Topic Dog Boards / Health / Heat Done- couple questions?
- By dollface Date 17.08.12 11:15 UTC
Moose is finally out of her heat which is nice- hubby would like to spay her b4 her next one but I'd like to wait till she
has at least 2 more. Would it make a huge difference?

I noticed her teats poked out a lot more when her heat came on- sure it has a lot to do with her hormones but will
they go back to where you can barely see them? Been about a week since her heat has been done.

Glad that life is back to normal so to speak lol

Thanks :-)

If she is still under a year old, bearing in mind one of her parents is a giant breed I would wait another season, to give time for her skeletal growth to be complete.

One advantage is that your are more likely to be able to time her spay for midway between seasons if she has had at least two, to give you an idea of her likely pattern.

Things never return to the pre first season state, the vulva "pops" getting rid of the crease where it meets the perineum and the nipples stay more prominent.

It can take several weeks post season before she returns to what will be her mid season state.

I agree that waiting till full maturity is reached before spaying is a good idea, the reproductive hormones do more than just deal with puppy production, the most important in a giant breed is the closing of the growth plates in the long bones, spaying/neutering too early will delay closure resulting in longer legs than the breed should have.

I have found that after the first season you know what to expect and it doesn't drag on so long.

She will be 11 months on the 2nd- I told hubby I am not exactly sure when her next season would be- I told him
any where from 6-9 months. Hopefully I get my way and we can allow her to have 2 more season's which will def
make her closer to 2 yrs about when I want to spay her anyhow, this way I'll book her in
2 months after her season is done. Then I'll have her teeth cleaned while she is under.

The other big thing our vet says is a good idea is to have her tummy tucked to help decrease the chance of Bloat. Am wondering
really if that procedure is necessary? Hubby and I have been pondering this for awhile- still have some time to think but really don't want
to put her through more then she really needs to.

Thank you for the help :-)

That's weird it put 3 posts. It just kept doing that little circle thing then would say something like timed out- didn't even think
