What with it taking two weeks for a policy to enact from the time you purchase it i was wondering if you could purchase it in advance so that when you have your dog it's already active?

Not sure. I would have a look at the small print. It may say in the declaration that you are the owner. It does with cars anyway :)

I am the owner officially, just he hasn't been imported yet. I may wait to be safe. Thanks!

Well if you are, all paid and what have you, then I would say you could very well take out insurance and perhaps even ought to as presumably the person who he is currently residing with is not covered any longer as they are no longer the owner. You don't want to fall between two stools. I think I would be discussing this with the insurance company.

why is it taking 2 weeks to enact the policy? Normally policies are active as soon as you start them - certainly petplan and KC are... you get your free weeks and can simply keep them on. I'm sure as soon as you become the owner you are responsible for health and therefore you should have insurance..... even if the dog isn't with you physically.....

Regardless of the time taken to get a policy up and running if the pup is yours any health costs would be yours to pay so I would insure asap if that is what you had in mind.

Usually if the owner takes out the insurance then there's no cover against illness for 14 days before the free 4 weeks starts. If the covernote is activated by a vet (who can legally state the animal appears healthy and has records to back it up) then the illness cover starts immediately. Accidents are
usually (but check the small print) covered immediately.

I'm not in the UK and nor has pup been so the free four week breeder thing doesn't apply. I have just spoken to the insurance company and asked can I take it out in advance (the policy) of him being in my home as he is legally my pup already and they agreed, so I will do that and that will lessen the two week ''standown period'' which basically means that if you buy your insurance on monday, it is not active and can't be used until monday two weeks in the future. They said it's not active in any way, not for accidents, or insurance. Maybe it's an Irish thing.

I've seen an assumption/presumption on some policies that the dog lives with you - maybe worth bearing that in mind, I'd assume that the dog still living abroad would void a policy through that.
ETA Never mind, missed your last post! :-)

I explained to them that he wasn't living with me yet but they said it was ok... .but who knows? it was just one person on the phone? :-//

If he is your property and simply now being boarded by his breeder then all should be fine.
No different to you putting him in kennels for a few weeks while on holiday.
Normally policies are active as soon as you start them - certainly petplan and KC areI think you will find that you are only insured for accidents for the first 2 weeks with Pet Plan, but not illness. For this reason when my pup got Parvo at 6 weeks old I had to fork out over £1500 as I was within the first 2 weeks. I was silly enough to start the insurance on the day I collected the pup, in future I will insure 2 weeks before collecting the pup so the full insurance is active.

Good point Barbara though I wonder would him being in a different country make a difference?

Many Insurances now cover for example 30 days abroad, so best to choose one of those.
