We have our place pretty well secured. We have access to our drive secured by six foot high solid wood gates and a six foot gate to the left of it to get into the back garden and the back door ( we use this rather than the front door) then from that gate we have a five ft dry stone wall with trellising on eight foot poles running down the side and front of the house with a six ft gate for access to the front door. The only people who use the front foot are the postie or sometimes a courier but they are good at making sure the gate is closed.

The problem is the back gate as now Dingo (nine year old daughter) is now playing out a lot more she often has friends coming round. With having the back door open for most of the time so the girls can have access to the garden at all times I am slightly nervous about one of the friends coming in not realising the dogs are out and being frightened. The other issue we have is that there have been a couple of times where the gate  has been left open and although the girls are not escape artists if they have an opportunity to go for an impromptu wander. It happened this week and luckily the neighbours are good and will walk them back home. Puds is ok as she is a plodder now but Betty is a tigger when she meets people and unless I am there to recall her and stop her she will greet people with two paws on their shoulders and a big lick !

So I am thinking whilst we are in all gates will be bolted and I will put two door bells on each gate so visitors can ring to be let in. Might even go as far as getting CCTV installed so we can see who it is done can decide if we want to go and and let them in !

So has anybody got an ideas about the best type as really want something quite robust and definitely waterproof as we have had a few before on the doors and they have all lasted about a couple of months and stopped working or have just fallen apart ?

Thanks
Lucy

The back of my house is often mistaken for the front and people use it more than the front so it is 7 ft high fences and a 6 ft pedestrian gate always locked and to solve the problem I just have an old fashioned clanger type belll with rope handle. As soon as someone touches the bell my 3 indoor remote control Girlies explode into action...I never miss anyone !! LOL

PS had it over 17 years and never needed to worry alout it going wrong !!

Lo  we have a clanger bell and rope too. Can hear it a mile away. Often the simplest things are the best :)

Back gate is quite a way from where we normally are and so we would probably not hear it ! We don't hear people knocking on the door now !

Can't you put a sign up asking people to go to front door and keep back door locked ?

I think you'd be surprised at how loud clanger bells can be, we have one on our side gate and can hear it very well, in the house, and the gate is some distance away.

I'll second that!!! Damn things are deafening and people do love to give them a real good clanging lol

I want all or nothing as we will be getting a post box as well as want to keep the place like gchq in readiness for when we have the pup !

Yes you are right they maybe loud but I think a big clanger bell rather than a smaller door bell will be much less inviting for children to keep ringing :-)

i just got one from argos for about 20.  you can't get to my door as its behind the gate. so put the doorbell on the fence post. we have one plugged in and a portable bell and have had it for over a year and still as good as new.
