We have recently taken on a rescue springer.  She came to us on Wagg which I gradually changed over to Skinners Salmon and Rice.  At the beginning she was producing lots of soft, unformed, VERY smelly poo.  This has improved a lot since changing her, (I was thinking poss wheat intolerance) her first 1/2 of the day are nice and formed and not too smelly however, she is still producing about 5/6 poos a day, with the ones towards the end of the day getting progressively softer.  She was very skinny (could easily see ribs and pelvis) although this has improved.  She seems to pass food very quickly though e.g she was given a raw carrot to munch on about 4.30pm yesterday but this carrot was showing in her poo only 2 hrs later.

This just seemed a little quick to me, I have never came across this before so really just asking if this is what others would consider as being within the 'normal' parameters.  I've been lucky, I think, to have alsways had dogs with iron constitutions which produce good, well formed poos, twice a day, like clockwork!

I am not feeding her overly generous portions, aiming for slow steady weight gain.  All she gets is her complete dry food, split into 2 meals (about 7am and 6pm), no other titbits except the occasional carrot as I am cautious of her tummy.  She has also been wormed and had her primary innoculations.

Not an expert but I have heard others say that Skinners goes straight through their dogs - maybe look at a different food

i have just changed my dogs food to Wagg Sensitive as she has been diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease and have heard that pumpkin or butternut squash is good for loose stools etc.

how long have you had her ? did she have this problem before she came to you?

could it be stress related? with the move or is she chilled?

You could try RC sensitive control tinned which comes in dry too  I think,  I always have a few tins  in stock for any possible upset tums .http://www.medicanimal.com/product/~product_id=5043;jsessionid=5E1834DAE9338A3780F0F24668609F97.jvm1 its quite expensive but you can buy seperate from a vet . I also keep a couple of sachets of  this in stock too..http://www.petmeds.co.uk/p-8068-purina-veterinary-diet-canine-fortiflora-30-x-1g.aspx?=NXUK (also available from vets in seperate sachets)
I also use  tree bark powder from dorwest.

This is the advice given by my vet for upset tums if the usual 24 hr starvation doesnt clear up the problem.

May be worth a check up at the vets.

I have read on here that some dogs are allergic to rice and need potato instead.

Two hours from input to output does seem quick, are you sure it isn't the carrot from the day before?

Yes I am always stating the virtue of steamed/mashed pumpkin/butternut squash for firming up the stools in a matter of hours, it can be frozen in ice cube trays and kept handy in the freezer, give one cube/desertspoonful at a time.

I hope things settle soon soo he can start to gain and maintain a healthy weight.

I feed nature diet so the dogs do produce bits of carrot in the poo everyday although 2 poos a day is usually thier limit.

Not for me but a lot of people on here give great credit to a barf diet for dogs who have problems. Which more time consuming may benefit your dog in the long run.

Have to admit Rhodach, it did cross my mind about changing her to potato but I am loath to at the moment after having changed her to the Salmon and rice quite recently.  There had been a great improvement from the Wagg to the Skinners, on Wagg, every stool was loose and the smell was horrendous.  Now, the stools are fine - nice and formed -  until afternoon then get a bit sloppy from then.  The sheer volume of poo is what worries me, and the fact she seems to be digesting the food so quickly...bit concerned that this has got something to do with her lack of condition?//  (she didn't have carrots the day before so the carrot yesterday was def only from the 2hrs before. :-(

Don't really know her history before here so difficult to say what she was like previously.  All I can really go on is what she was like when she arrived and how skinny she was.  She is quite timid so nerves could be an issue.

I have some tree bark powders so may try that initiallythen perhaps the pumpkin etc.

I DO know that she was only on one meal a day previously, rather than the split I have her on.

Splitting her meals is a good idea to stop her daily ration hurrying through the bowel without being absorbed. It sounds like over night the food is staying in the gut for longer and more fluid is being removed giving the firmer stools during the early part of the day but her first meal of the day is speeding things up again resulting in looser stools.

Nerves could be another reason and only time will help those, has the vet come up with any suggestions to slow things down?

Pumpkin isn't easy to come by at this time of the year[ I even searched for plain tinned online with no success, too heavy for friends across the pond to send me some] but been told that butternut squash works just as well you just have to buy more.

Hope things settle soon.

I had a friend who was involved in Springer Rescue, and had dogs in in a very bad state. She always put them on economy fish fingers and instant mash just made up with boiled water. Once their tummies had settled she would gradually put in very small amounts of complete food. If they were fine on the complete you can increase the amount.
If you don't know the dogs history and the problem has been going on for a long time, the dog will need time to build a lining on it's stomach again.
I always keep fish fingers and instant mash in for mine if anyone has a tummy upset, it settles everything down very quickly.
