A dog has been found in Southern Ireland with a tattoo - 2 numbers, a letter, then 2 more numbers. Could anyone suggest who/where to contact to find ownership details of the dog?

ETA - I've contacted the National Dog Tattoo Register - they use the right ear and the dog has the tattoo in the left ear.

What breed of dog? Racing greyhounds and hunting hounds are usually tattooed.

If they are done by NDTR then they would be either Letter (denoting region), Number (denoting a grouping, GSD, Hound etc), another letter, (denoting the identity of the tattooist), followed by the individual number, so all my puppies are R7K???, those done as adults would be RK???.

As has been said they are usually tattooed in the right ear, but can be done in left say if there was a reason not do do the right, or a redo if the previous tat was bad.

As it is Southern Ireland it is worth finding out if there are any other Registries (outside Greyhounds, hunting hound packs) that tattoo over there.

Might be worth contacting the Irish Kennel Cub for advice as it could be a tattoo from an overseas registry.
If the dog is registered at the IKC as an import would they not have a tattoo number down?
They might be able to match the dog up to the last known owner at IKC?

It's not typical or remotely usual to tattoo non-greyhounds. I would try the IKC, but keep ringing as they are notorious for not answering their phones...
