Ive got a small kong like toy for my 8 week old puppy and I don't want to put the kong type meat in it.  She's on dried food but if I put that in it will fall straight out, I don't want to upset her stomach and I don't want to end up with an overweight puppy.  Have any of you got any suggestions and am I being over cautious.

Try putting in your biscuits then use a very small amount of meat to pack the top. I then freeze mine but this might be a little hard to bite through for a puppy so perhaps just freeze it for a little while so not rock solid, but takes a little time to get through

what about just a smidge of pate squashed as far as you can push it in and squash against the wall of it?  Should keep the puppy interested enough to let them have a good chew

Soak the biscuits and shove the resulting porridge in - then freeze.  Also easy enough to wash out afterwards if you simply leave it to soak in some lukewarm water

**Edited to say: also have a look at the Salmon Mousse made by Fish4Dogs, this packs into Kongs very well and is perfectly safe to freeze.

Freezing the contents extends the 'chew factor', and is very soothing to teething puppies (when you get to that stage)

I bind the puppy kibble[some of their daily ration] together meat paste, smooth peanut butter or tinned/pouch/tray dog meat, freezing certainly makes it last longer and with the heat we have been having lately will be very welcome.

Don't leave a pup alone with a Kong as I found that any of them less than a black one can easily be chewed and mine is a small breed.

Arden grange do a paté type meat in a tube that is great for Kong toys. It never upset Nando's stomach and he was quite sensitive so should be OK for a puppy.

I also cube cheese and put one or two bits in the kong. This lasts for ages.

I had the same problem, My girl at 11 weeks chewed a big hole in her red kong, she has a black one now and a black kong bone.

I use squairs of cheese in mine, i wanted to try the past stuff the sell but cant get it in my local shop.

Glad it wasn't just mine who could chew their way through the red Kongs, have seen the puppy ones but they are even softer, the black one hasn't got a mark on it and as pups it got lots of chewing.

The tennis ball covered Kong toys I won't buy again as within seconds of giving it to one of my dogs she was chewing on the squeaker, luckily she spat it out, on a small pup it could have been a choking hazard or blocked their intestine, reported what I found to the company and the online shop I got them from and got my money back as I had bought 8 to share between my dachsies and my Mums.

The amount of toys we go throught, we get my girl the rough and tough range from pets at home and go fo rthings for bigger dogs but they dont normal last long. One webbed fabric type toy only lasted 5mins!  But the black kong stuff perfect still.
We also tryed the teddys with no stuffing as they say they are safer but its not that safe when they eat the face of it off and swallow it lol we got i back eventualy.

I'm really shocked that you have had red kongs chewed through! We've had them for all our dogs and not one has been destroyed! Nando has two or three of them and as a puppy was left with them and never managed to destroy them! He is a GSD so by no means small, either.

My Golden Retriever chewed through a black Kong so it was replaced free of charge through PAH but in the end I have had to take it away from him not due to his chewing it but due to the bumps and bruises I sustained when he realised hurling it on the tiled floor was the quickest way to empty the contents out :-) I also feared for the windows as he would throw it up into the air as part of the process and Kongs can  bounce really high and hard.

Nando is only allowed kongs outdoors or in his crate if I am supervising. He throws it up like a whale does with a seal pup and when it lands it bounces all over the place!! It is his favourite toy though and the only one he'll entertain really. On weekday mornings my Dad is generally the first one up with him, sometimes as early as 6am, so noone else is up and they place a game of a game of 'Find the kong' where Nando has to find it, so Dad can fill it with treats to keep him quiet until I wake up.
