I have a 16week old bitch and she is smelling from her Anal Glands of that normal horrid smell.

I have My older girls glands emptied once or twice a year as a rule....but thought 16 weeks seems rather young.
I will take her to My vets this week but just asking you experienced people your thought's on this.

She has alway's been fed Nature diet and a good kibble if that helps.
Thanks.

Are her stools well formed? Soft stools won't empty the anal glands naturally.

I use pumpkin/butternut squash steamed, mashed and frozen in ice cube trays and then kept handy in the freezer, one or two cubes depending on size of dog is enough to firm up stools within a few hours.

I have read on here giving more bone in the diet has the same effect but as I only give the occasional chicken wing as a treat I can't really comment.

Her stools have been excellent from day one...well formed not ever soft...thats why it concerns Me more that they need doing at such a young age.

Cant remember the age's My other dog's glands were expressed from pups but didn't think it was this soon.

I have never had any of my dogs anal glands evacuated manually, I have occasionally smelled that smell when the dogs have passed a stool and it has activated their glands, it soon goes away.

I was warned by several work colleagues that the vet we used was automatically emptying the anal glands at the pups first visit, they were then having to take the dogs back regularly for further treatment, my other vet[ I now use 99%of the time] told me that it was rare for them to empty naturally after being done manually so I watch the vets like a hawk when pups go in for vacs and check up.

Oh so maybe I should wait a while and see if she can manage to empty them herself....I will see how she goes on.
Thankyou.

Our pup (now 20mths) had an anal smell when we changed her to raw about 2 weeks after she arrived (12wks old), she had been on wainwrights trays and poos weren't too bad.  I cleaned her bum with baby wipes after each poo as I think as her poos got a bit firmer she was emptying them at each poo and some residue remained on her giving us the smell.  After a week or two it settled down, I felt the glands while bathing her and they didn't feel full so I imagine the smell was just a bit of juice at the end of a poo.  What a lovely subject!! ;)

Thats another possibility for the smell...as when she come's in from the garden is when I can smell it.
Thankyou.

I would doubt it is her anal glands as I don't think they are active this young.
