Im after a bit of advice my 17 month old boy was bitten by another dog (while in the ring) at a show yesterday he has a nasty little cut on the top of his nose now, we gave it a good clean yesterday, it had dried no more bleeding if there anything i can do to help it heal and not leave a scar?

It will leave a scar but that is not really a problem just keep it clean. Did the judge send the dog from the ring and did you tell the secretary what had happened?

My little terrier had her nose ripped from front to back on the the top right down the middle by a rat she had caught. So much blood. I went straight to the vets and he gave her ABs and said to keep it clean and it should heal. I couldn't imagine that such a split would ever join together again - but it did. Now I cannot even see where it happened and as far as I can see there is no scar, just a beautiful brown nose.

She still goes after rats !!!

In which case I guess it can heal without a scar, lets say I have never had it happen but it obviously can but either way it does not really matter providing there is no spread of infection and I would be more worried about a rat or cat bite than one from another dog.

Call your vet tomorrow and ask about antibiotics - it might be prudent, given that dogs are likely to stick their nozzers in grubby places (or maybe that's just mine!!).  Also, if your dog is a messy eater and generally gets food on his nose then it will be worth making sure the wound is cleaned after every meal.

If it were one of mine I'd put some very dilute hibiscrub in a spray and simply flush the area two or three times a day and blot it dry.  If you are careful to preserve the scab,  then you reduce the risk of scarring still further - however I expect if it gets annoying he'll simply rub it off!

Hope he's ok and not too upset by the incident

Have had this happen SO many times to several dogs. I find in each and every case it has healed easily without help, to start with there will be a white scar but after a few weeks the scar fills in with pigment again and vanishes.

This is exactly what I did and with the ABs it all worked well

Just a quick update. lokis nose is fine we had a quick trip to the vets just to make sure it was, he was happy that it was clean and healing already, just told us to make sure it was kept clean after eating and if it started to weep or look sore to take him back, but its healing so nicely you would hardley notice it. No the dog was not removed there was no noise from the dog he just went for my boys face and a lot of peolpe did not see what happened i pulled loki from the ring and informed the steward as everyone else was busy in the ring, the dog was not placed and the owner did come to talk to me after he offered to pay any vet bill and couln't say sorry enough> we had a good chat he was quiet new to the show ring so i gave him a few pointers (like make sure you dont get too close to other dogs in the ring) but told him if it was my dog i would not be taking him back into the ring. Loki does not seam fased by it all we were going to see a very good friend with his very friendly rottie girl but looks like i wont make it for a couple of weeks as just too busy with last minute bits for the wedding.

Glad it all ended happily, sounds as if the other dog was overwhelmed by the occasion or perhaps even been nipped himself.
