Topic Dog Boards / Health / PETS passport/Tapeworm treatment
- By lleonder [gb] Date 06.08.12 11:56 UTC
Hi am due to leave the UK tomorrow and had planned to obtain the tape worm treatment from my vet before I left and then take it with me to a vet in Germany to get her booked stamped for returning.
Is this what everyone else does?  And what tapeworm treatment do you give?  My vets offered me drontal which I'm not keen on and I had been expecting something purely for the treatment of tapeworn and not an all round wormer.

The wormer must contain praziquantel and the two I know that are on the approved list for pets scheme are either Drontal lpus or Milbermax.

If getting passport completed ovseas I usually take my own meds that I know are approved - I use drontal

Don't know if the vet stamps your book for free , he has to supervise you actually giving it really, although our vet abroad gave me the tablets and let me go to the trailer and give it to my dogs myself , without observing that I had done it . . Have used Drontal on Rough Collies and Pekingese with no ill effects .

Thanks I'm going to use Droncit which is only for Tapeworm and is praziquantel.  I wormed all my girls a few weeks back with panacur so was reluctant to do worming again so soon but as this is just tapeworm it shouldnt be so bad.
Can any vet stamp the book?  I know there was only 2 vets in my practice over here that can give out the pets passport?

Yes I have hears some of the vets just sign the book.  I expect they will charge a minimum of a consult anyway.  Thanks

The vet will charge a consultation  fee ( around 32Euros) Unless you provide your own worming treatment  this will be charged for as well. Make sure the vet signs and stamps the tapeworm treatment page at the time given and also signs and stamps the Clinical Examination page. I always take Drontal tablets with me and never had a problem. Remember that you have to effect this not less than 24 hours and not more than 120 hours before embarkation ( ferry/rail/air )

Whoops ! Just re read this ! I DID have a problem years ago when the Pet Passport scheme was piloted - nearly had Meg taken into quarantine due to faulty timing. Anyway, recent posting is up to date.

Thanks Jan.  I have just returned and had no problems.  I took the droncit tablets with me and the vet in Germany only charged 4 euros to stamp and sign the book.  Luckily her English was good and she seemed quite clued up on the Pet passport.

Wow, 4 euros is brilliant, the German vet who stamped our passports charged 10euros per dog last month and I thought this was very reasonable as she also gave them a quick check up and stamped that bit of the passport book too. We took our own tablets (cestem).

4 Euros ! So why am I charged so much in France ??!!! My French is good so I'm gonna barter next time.
What are others paying ?

If I don't get the passports done before leaving I tend to use the show vets. Some don't  charge at all, the most  I have paid is 20 euro

A friend also said she has had the passport stamped for free too.  I was surprised it was only 4 euros.  If it was my own vet at home he would have charged at least £23 the price of a consult.
When I got my girls pets passport done in June my own vets quoted over £120!!  I phoned round and took her to a vet just down the road and got the whole thing done for £67.  If I didnt have so much faith in the vets I use and like the fact the do all thier own emergancy out of hours (which is hard to find where I stay) I would change.
