Topic Dog Boards / General / Poodle question for groomers

At what age can you start to clip a poodle coat ?
My pup has been scissored both times that she has been but it isn't short enough and she gets bored and restless so I thought clipping may be quicker.
Obviously I don't want to spoil her coat in any way but there is just too much of it !
Thanks in advance.

It won't spoil her coat, but all the poodles I have ever owned and groomed have not be clipped short on the back until usually over a year old (I did use clippers with comb attachments as well as scissoring), only because they tend to look a bit on the lean side until after first or second season.  This latest pup is now 19 months and I've only recently taken her short on her back for this very reason, she had her second season in July and has filled out nicely now.  It could be for this reason the groomer has not clipped yet, maybe she is skinny!

Any age you like really, I get most pups in at about five months old for their first big puppy hair cut.

The sooner you start with a clippers, the better as they get used to it easier if they are younger ;)

With my Bedlington pups, I give them their first puppy clip and trim at around six weeks old, and they have the older dogs clipped in front of them before that as well.  You don't have to clip them really short, but just getting used to the sound and feeling of the clippers is a big thing.  If introduced correctly, they learn to love the whole affair :-D
