Are there any disadvantages to the free puppy insurance you get when buying a puppy? For instance if the pup becomes ill during that time, after the 4 weeks is up are you still covered for that particular illness and if so is it only with the insurance company that has the free insurance? thanks

After the four weeks is up the pup would only be covered for that condition if you extended the cover to a full policy, and only with that insurer. If you changed insurers then that condition wouldn't be covered.
I can't see any disadvantages personally, some insurance is better than none. More importantly though, I'm pretty sure you're likely to be instantly covered for injury AND illness. Most policies that you take out yourself will cover you instantly for injury but you will have to wait 14 days before illness cover kicks in.

I tell puppy buyers to take out a policy with their chosen insurers before the free one runs out because of the 14 day exemption in any new policies.
If they take out a new insurance policy before the old one runs out with a different insurance company, will the pup still be covered for any ilness claimed by the free one?
