Hi I have a very fussy dogue de Bordeaux , he's 20 months old . Since he was about 6 months old he became a very fussy eater ! He can go days without eating .... Sometimes he's just not interested in food . We have tried everything from changing foods , only leaving his bowl down for a while .... And everything else you can imagine . He's been to see our vet & there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with his stomach etc he's just blinking fussy !
He does suffer with hyperkeratosis which can cause him some discomfort with his paws sometimes but this problem is managed but us daily . I was just wondering if anybody has any ideas if there is anything we can add to his food to make him want to eat ! It's so horrible to see him like this . Some days he looks so sad & quiet until he's sick ( from having an empty stomach) then his appetite will pick up again for a few days then he goes on hunger strike again !
Any suggestions will be great as we are at our wits end .... We just want a happy healthy dog !
Many thanks

I forgot to add he currently eats royal canin giant junior kibble mixed with prize choice frozen tripe/beef/lamb . We've tried him on natural instinct frozen/ raw food too  but not really interested in any of this either .

I've had this problem, with one dog in particular, I'm afraid, in the end, I had him castrated, he was 6 years old, so not as bad as having a youngster done, after the op, I couldn't stop him from eating !.
When I was going through this my vet gave me Zantac to stop the sickness, you can also use Pro-Kaolin which is a paste for animals you can get quite easily.

I have one too..... each day I put his food out I never know if he will eat it..
we have just been though a bad couple of weeks with one of my bitches in season.. so he was fed chicken, fish, steak (cooked) (not all together of course) with oil then I pour the oil over his naturediet and mix in the meat... then cover it with strong cheese... all this just to get him to eat ... he lost a bit of weight but now that the season is over he thankfully is eating his food again, we dont have a problem with the bile with him .
I do find sardines mixed with the dog food goes down well.
my vet doesnt believe in giving zantac ... he told me when I had  a problem with bile with one of my other dogs... to change the food and give probioticshttp://www.hyperdrug.co.uk/Purina-Veterinary-Diet-Canine-FortiFlora-30-x-1g-sachets/productinfo/PURCANFF/  and tree bark powder with garlic tabs, have to admit it did work , changed it stopped, he said the food she was on irritated her stomach causing the bile during the morning ...

He doesnt eat as much as I would like and is in my opinion too thin... it can be soul destroying ... I would much rather have a fat dog that needs to loose weight!

I have have had very similar problems  with my bitch but at the moment she is eating ok. I fry some liver then when cool grate a little over her food. I give her a small amount of liver as a training treat to wet her appetite beforehand. She is fed raw but has never been an enthusiastic eater but this is working for her.

I have this with one of my bitches. She can go days without eating. Drives me mad. Shes 7 now so unlikely to change :( The only thing I have found that makes her eat is competition from other dogs. Put her near other dogs that are devouring their food makes her eat sharpish in case she loses hers :)

I've been through this for 2 years with my picky princess, we tried a dozen or more kibbles, a dozen or more tinned and tray foods, we tried Prize Choice raw food, we tried human food! At the moment she is quite happy and enthusiastic about Orijen kibble, mixed with a little beef mince, but if she carries on like this (it's been a couple of months now which is one of her longest eating periods) I might risk reducing the mince. But I'm happy for her to have some value mince mixed in tbh, she's still lean and not remotely tubby! It's pretty expensive stuff, but worth it to see her cleaning her bowl at last!

Thank you all for your replies & advice we will take this all on board . Hudson has been to see our vet tonight & had some bloods taken ...just to rule anything out . Hopefully if they come back ok we can then move on & try & resolve this ... Maybe by trying to change his behavior towards feed time ! Will keep you all posted. Many thanks again Leigh :)
