I took my 8yo goldie to vets last week for them to check out a lump on her eyelid and they advised to bring her in the next day for them to remove the ?andenoma?.  (Cost £450 ........and I'm not insured).  Over the weekend, the v-section has opened, and the stitches are no longer in place.  I phoned vet this morning and have made an appointment to see the same vet tomorrow.   Do you think I'll need to pay another £450, if they have to do it again?

Surgery price normally includes any follow up treatment.

That was very pricey, I had a lump removed from an ear some time ago, it was under £100 and that included £40 for lab analysis of the lump which was benign.

Some years ago my Golden had an operation to remove a lump on chest (hygroma) and had a tube inserted in his chest to drain the fluid. He managed to scratch the tube out overnight and so had to have it re-done. I was charged twice because it was my fault he got the tube out even though he had socks on to try and stop it.

I think it depends why the stitches have come apart. Has your dog rubbed their face or anything to relieve the itching perhaps? Or did the vet not complete a very good job?

I had a lump removed from the eyelid of my 19kg dog in January 2011 which cost over £400. £100 was for the various blood tests recommended before the anaesthetic as he was 12/13.

The vets that I use are known in the area as "very good but also very pricey".  Seriously considering changing to another, especially as the itemised bill shows a 3g tube of Fucithalmic Vet for £19.74 - I checked it out on the net and can find it for sale for £5:36!!!  Consultations cost £44, and any follow up consultation is £29.

Anyway, the only time she could have been scratching at it would be during the night when we're not around.

I'll be really peeved if I'm to pay again.  I wish pet owners could have some sort of Ombudsman to take complaints to!

Thanks everyone for your input.  I'll let you know how we get on.

Don't forget to add the charge for the prescription to the online price. :-)

That'll be when it happened. Was she wearing a buster collar when you weren't with her to supervise?

If you like your vet and trust them is insurance a possibility instead of changing vets ?

If you aren't happy with their charges just change vets. It's easy to forget that they are running a business though  - they aren't just there for our convenience. They have all the normal bills to pay - rent, business rates, insurance, tax, staff wages, electricity, telephones - the list goes on and on and obviously varies in different areas. They have to add a pretty high mark up on things to make a profit. Tis the same as when I pay £1.20 in my local cafe for a 40p can of coke.
