Hi, I have a soil eater, has done it all his life and I can find no way to stop him and he is 12 years now. When he was a puppy it used to really worry me but it does not seem to have hurt him and now I just wish he would not bring lumps of it into the house.
Sure it is better if they don't do it but I can tell you how to stop it having been unsuccessful myself.
I have a 13 year old soil eater here, no idea why and no idea how to stop him. I've tried lots of things and he still goes for it if he fancies a little nibble. People have said it is a deficiency in the diet but I don't know a deficiency of what? All of mine are fed raw.He isn't excessive, just every now and then, my others do it on the odd occasion. As my lad is 13 I can only presume it hasn't done him any harm. As Louie is so young if you could get him out of it now then I would.
Good Luck, let us know if you find a cure :)
My 4 month old pup is also a soil eater.
She will pick lumps out of the veg patch. But I have also seen her shoving her nose into the soil on the grass and digging down for roots. However this morning I realised that it is not roots she is digging for - it's worms !!!!! Eugh ! It was a really long juicy one and I just managed to wrestle half of it off her.
Distraction with a game is the only answer I have found but you can't be out there all the time.
