Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / KCAB - Did you know?

This happened to a friend of mine recently.

She is a well known breeder and recently registered a new litter with the KC.  With the return of her documents was a letter stating that they would register the litter on this occasion but as a KCAB she should have been aware that the sire and dam are both permanently identified.  Her breed is fortunate that no health tests are required by the KC so although her bitch was microchipped the sire obviously wasn't.  So is this another question we have to ask stud dog owners until it is compulsary to chip all dogs?

This is something I have never come across as my own breed requires health tests and are therefore identifiable.

Taking this a step further, should we when either taking a bitch to be mated or have a bitch visit have a chip reader available to ensure the bitch is the one the paperwork is for?

Good topic for discussion I think...

It doesn't have to be microchip, tattoo or DNA profile all acceptable, but permanent ID of breeding stock has been required for ABS breeders right from the start.

I do think though that the stud used had to be yet, as initially they didn't, but as someone said our breed requires health tests so all of them have to have permanent ID.

Hi, yes this happened to me too, I got a letter from the kc when I reg the litter saying the same, in a toy breed I had used a well know show sire, I was an ab at the time, they were not,[ there is still alot of people who will not join] I could not use this sire again as they would not m-chip.There are no health test in our breed.

I do appreciate all breeding stock has to be identifiable but this was an outside stud dog (an ABS bitch breeder going to presumably a non ABS stud owner) - I suppose you just don't think to ask the question 'is your stud dog microchipped' etc.

I know when the scheme started that this came up and they said that initially stud dog owners didn't have to have ID, as not in the control of the ABS breeder, but that eventually all breeding stock used by AB's must have Permanent ID.

I'd be asking the stud dog owner why his dog wasn't hip scored, so the ID wouldn't' be an issue.  As I said hip scoring really ought to be across the board for all breeds, and in my opinion eye tested to check for emerging problems before they become a widespread issue..
