A dog I know has recently been titre tested and the results have come back stating the only illness not covered is distemper. Vet wants to re-vaccinate from scratch (with a different brand) obviously not happy about this but the vet says they can't get separate distemper vaccine. Is this correct or is there a separate one available.

Would like to know what you'd do if this was your dog.

As far as I know the distemper vaccine isn't available alone, but comes in a mixed dose with hepatitis and parvovirus.

My vet certainly doesn't have a separate vaccine, it's a combined jab.  I guess I would go for the re-vaccinate, rather than risk distemper.

Didn't we call it hardpad when I was young?

I'm sure when this happened to me, my vet said she could get a separate vaccine but I'd have to buy a whole box which would be £100 plus, I'm not sure which vaccine it was though, so might be different for different vaccines.

According to this list, there is no registered vaccine which is only for distemper:

However, according to a programme on BBC radio a few weeks ago, UK laboratories have only seen about 2 cases of distemper in the last year.

Finally, just because the titre test has come back saying it can't find antibodies for distemper, doesn't mean your dog isn't covered - memory cells last far longer than antibodies and it's likely your dog is covered.

If it were my dog, I wouldn't do anything.  But if you need the titre test for kennelling or something else, you might have to go along with your vet's recommendation.
