Topic Dog Boards / Health / tears from eyes?
- By Wendy Wong Date 23.06.12 13:03 UTC
My lab has had tears from her eyes over the last few months.  We have tried drops (maxitrol) from the vets but no luck. Going in on Monday to be sedated and have her nasal passage checked.
The eyes aren't gunky just clear tears. She doesn't seem bothered by this but  something is wrong and may cause problems long term. Has anyone any experience of this ?

it is not uncommon, often blocked tear-ducts due to various causes including blockage due to infection, pollen etc.

Sounds like allergies to me, if there is gunk in the tear duct the vet should be able to massage them to clear them.

I presume lashes growing in the wrong direction has been ruled out?

Is your vet going to check for entropian etc too?  I know some dogs can have narrow tear ducts which causes overflowing, but I'd have thought not so much with a lab shaped head and moreso in a breed with a small muzzle.

OK. All went well yesterday at the vets.  All checks done and ducts flushed out.  No problems found but tears still trickle! Have been given some different eye drops to use for the next 14 days and see how we go.  Keep you posted .

Two weeks later, drops four times a day of Tiacil and still no improvement.  Now going for a five day course of anti biotics and a last resort! If still no joy its seems .. "we have just got to live with it"

Sorry to hear that things have not improved.

How old is your dog? Is this the first time with this problem? It may be an allergy like hayfever and until the pollen count drops this will continue.

The dog is nearly seven, and she has had this problem since mid december so I doubt its due to pollen?? Never had it before.  Maybe its an allergy to RAIN !!!!! :-)

Please don't live with it. Go to see a veterinary opthalmologist. It is worth having the pressure of the eye taken with a Tonopen to rule out Glaucoma. My Scarlet had this condition and one of the first symptoms can be tears. There is usually pain with it but some dogs can be very stoic.
