Topic Dog Boards / General / Toilet question....

Hi. I have a seven month old male border terrier and just wondered if it was normal at this age for him still not to lift his leg to wee? He sort of squats at the moment. He broke his back leg about 9 weeks ago and is more or less fully recovered (had to have a plate and screws placed in his leg which will be there forever) so I imagine this might have caused a little set back in this. He also sees other dogs very rarely now (we travel in between France and England all the time and the vet also told us not to let him around other dogs until his leg has healed properly) so this might also be a factor.

I'm not rushing him or anything - just curious as I'm a first time dog owner!

Thanks!

My 11 year old Beardie still doesn't always lift his leg every time. I'd not worry at 7 months or at all

My dog is nearly 5 years old, he's not been castrated and he's only ever cocked his leg twice in his life - the very first time he was 9 months old. He most definately scent-marks on walks but again, this is with all 4 legs on the floor, he doesn't squat as such, just stands there with a slight dip and tilt on the pelvis for 'flow' direction :)

For the first year of his life he lived with our other male dog that would always cock his leg to wee (despite having a dodgy back leg and weak rear end and despite being castrated), so it's not as if he hasn't seen how to cock a leg - he just doesn't bother!

Don't worry about it, some dogs just dont feel the need to cock a leg :)

My 10 year old Yankee nearly always squats to wee, though sometimes he lifts a leg.

Not a worry, my first dachsies attempt at cocking his leg age 10months at the tyre of my car went totally wrong, he put so much gusto into picking up his leg he fell over and wee went all over him and he ended up getting a bath, I never saw him try again till he was over 2 yrs old.

I have a 3yr old intact male who still squats, up till he was nearly 2yrs old there were 3 females to 2 males so I thought he was either copying them or being lazy, now there are 2 of each sex so I have decided he is just lazy, his other male instincts are working fine.

My Border Collie doesn't cock, and he is 7 years old in August.

Yet I have a 7 year old Long Coat Chihuahua bitch that almost always cocks.  She was spayed years ago!

my pomx bitch lifts her leg and squats quite an art I would think  I think she is keeping her skirts dry. My male gsd does either depending on the mood I think

Thank you everyone! I am no longer worried! Though I've just found a chewed up toilet roll in the hallway with a rather guilty looking Henry so maybe I should have other concerns.......

Don't be concerned, he's obviously using the toilet.  Good Boy!  :-)  :-)

Henry has now learnt to lift his leg to wee, unfortunately he's now adopting this pose for number two also.......

We also now have to stop at every tree on our walks so he can mark, quite cute really. Though I'm taking him scrambling tomorrow at the top of Cap de Long so if he does it on every boulder I might not then think it's so cute!!!
