Topic Dog Boards / Health / Insect Bites / Long Grass

I've recently moved out the country, and some of my dogs have been affected by the fly's/ insects etc that are in the grass.  At first i put the scratching / skin irritation down to fleas / ticks, but they are treated regularly and after treating for this to no avail I discussed with the vet and he think's the problem it the inscets/fly's in the fields where i have moved to.  Has anyone any experience with this, and if so how have you treated it successfully?
Many thanks, Eamon

I run my dogs in long grass from time to time and they have had a lot of grass seeds (some of which are VERY small) stuck in their fur. I prefer to walk after rain as I'm sure one of mine inhaled something, which made her very distressed a couple of weeks ago.

I'd hazard a guess that it's more likely to be the seeds causing the irritation than flies etc. Especially right now as everything seems to be going to seed.

Some farmers still spray . There are dusts and mould spores which cause allergies.Insect bites.
If the itching is seasonal, for instance in spring and in summer, it is more likely to be an allergy to pollens or to grasses. Wandering Dew and Paspalum are two of many plants that dogs are sensitive or allergic to. If the itching seems to be more intense on the underside of the dog - the part that rubs against plants - then sensitivities like this are more likely.
