My bitch had her litter on Monday morning, vet check with A/B's Tuesday, she is still bleeding but it's like a thick pinkish colour, which doesn't match my beige carpet every time she lies on it :)),is this normal and how long does it normally go on for? Also what products are best to clean carpets after dogs?We have a Vax and just ordinary carpet shampoo, but it's not very good, thanks.

yes, its normal and can go on for several weeks. If you think thats bad wait until the pups are running around pooing everywhere. :)

They are all different, my bitch still had the odd drip up until 9 weeks post whelp.  She was checked several times by the vet and was fine.  I was told in large breeds with large litters this is quite normal.

You might find it a good idea to put down a tarpaulin or dust sheets in the room where the pups and Mum are.

I've just moved my pups (3 weeks) and Mum into the kitchen (tiled floor) where the rest of the dogs are, so they can have a larger pen.

While she was in the living room I covered the sofa in a doubled bedspread and fortunately the floor is laminate with mats.

Mum is of course giving the other girls the hairy eyeball and grumping at them if they look as if they are going to look at the pups :)  All bar one have been there done that and got the tee-shirt so aren't that interested.   They are jsut more interested when the pusp are fed (on four meals a day eating like gluttons).

Surprisingly silly youngster has minded her p's and Q's and resisted the temptation to get in with them.  Another few days and she will lighten up and say come and see the babies and how clever I am.

A friend of mine works in the vets, she gave me loads of big waterproof sheets that they use in the operations,I lined her whelping box with them, caught all the mess, still have some, think I will put them to use. Then try and make my carpets look respectable

Congrats on your litter. I bought a large offcut of cheap lino that covered most of where they had access to which I kept washing down. I vaxed everywhere afterwards and it all came off fine, mind you I did keep on top of it by rubbing at spots as soon as I saw them.

ASDA do very cheap shower curtains in white and they work well for me.

The more placental beds there are to heal over the more bleeding, each time the pups feed the uterus contracts and expeels more blood and debris, I would be very worried if there was no loss, if it becomes smelly then take her to the vet ASAP, some discharge will continue till  mum stops feeding her pups.

Indeed! My first litter taught me a valuable lesson -ditch the carpet!! :) Had no choice after 9 pups had all pooed and peed on it. Covering with a sheet of tarpaulin or similar works for mum and small pups, but if you have large pups by the time they are 6 weeks old anything's fair game so they just move it, chew it, drag it around etc.  My last large breed litter even took a large piece of lino up.
