I have a 13 month old who has not had a season yet. Today at a show she was licking herself. I took a look and thought I saw a little bit of brown. Have checked her throughout the day and she looked like she perhaps had leaked urine, but tonight now that we are home I can see a discharge of a creamy yellow, but quite a lot. She is swollen and when you touch her vulva this discharge comes out quite quickly, (not very well described, but the best I can do). When I first saw a little I thought possible Vaginitis but I am now thinking Open Pyometra. Will be off to the Vets first thing in the morning but wondered if anyone else had had this type of thing. She is very well in herself and is eating very well.

It would be sensible to not give her any breakfast in the morning in case she needs to go for surgery.

I would have thought it would have a strong odour if it was Pyo and that this could be the lead up to her season starting or as you thought puppy vaginitis pre season.

A vet visit for a swab to check it out wouldn't hurt.

Just be careful/wary with the vet...

We had a bad experience when our young dog had vaginitis as a puppy.  It was basically really long, stringy creamy/clear discharge (with no smell) which came out of her when she wee-d.  It may have come out at other times, but she might have cleaned it up.

Our vet seemed not to have heard of vaginitis and wanted us to give her a vaginal douche - he did one in the surgery to show us how, and her yowls and yelping and panic was horrible to hear :(  Needless to say, we couldn't bring ourselves to do that to her, and it cleared up by itself when she had her first season. 

You might have a much better vet than we had, but just to warn you.

Is her temperature elevated?

Had something similar Bank Holiday Monday (typical). Only saw a very long greeny discharge from my bitch when she was eating her breakfast. Vet scanned her, didn't see anything remarkable, she wasn't ill at all and her temp was normal. As she had eaten we decided to keep an eye on her, was given a course of AB's and got her home. She laid on her back to expose her newly shaved tummy and I saw a tick, whilst I was getting it off the discharge came spouting out looking like ectoplasm. She still wasn't bothered and went back in on the Wednesday to be spayed. They confirmed it was a pyo but the duty vet on the Monday wasn't sure and said it could've been vaginitis.

One bitch of mine had a very late first season.  She was 18 months before it came but before that she had a few days of brownish discharge and creamy stuff, I figured this was just her starting and I was right, she came in properly a few weeks later.  I would only have taken her if she was stinky down there or unwell, she was neither.

Any news ?

Got an appointment at 11.50. This is a creamy discharge and has slowed right down from last night. I feel in my heart of hearts that it is Vaginitis but am having her checked 'just in case'. We are seeing one of the good Vets!. Will update later in the day (have to work this afternoon) Thanks for all the input. If it is a Pyo then at least it is an open one thankfully or I would have been at the emergency Vet last night!

Good news!  Vet did an internal exam (to check for grass seeds or abscess's), then did a scan to check for Pyo, nothing has been found on the scan thankfully. She is being treated for Vaginitis and most certainly is coming into season.
