Have just posted this on FB but lets get it to as many people as we can.

If you care then lets all share...do you support football...or the slaughter of innocent dogs.

It's a difficult one, I think it may have been crueller to leave these dogs on the streets, scavenging and starving, being run over, not being wormed, full of fleas and at the mercy of anyone passing by in a bad mood. They obviously had a huge stray problem, these dogs would never all have found homes. I just hope that it doesn't all revert back once the football is over!

As awful as it sounds that may have been a lucky escape for some dogs. I often read a FB site that helps out with stray dogs in Romania that are caught on the streets and put into local pounds. The conditions the dogs are kept in are horrendous - often beaten, only fed once or twice a week and then only fed scraps, living on concrete and amongst their own excrement. The pounds will sell the dogs to rescue organisations so tend to keep the dogs for years living in dreadful conditions and those who survive have an appalling life waiting for a rescue to maybe afford to buy them and ship them out of the country. IMHO death would be far preferable - those few who are saved are far outweighed by those that live a life with no hope, dignity or respect.

If it's anything like the general populations attitudes in Poland no more than 20 years ago, most dogs were either kept chained or free to roam about in much the way cats do here.

No-one neutered them, kittens and puppies were either drowned/disposed of, or some reared and given away.

The shelters were more like concentration camps, mopping up nuisance strays, or owner hand ins.  Attitudes to dogs and cats were very casual, unless it was an expensive or pampered pedigree.  Economically people barely could lock after themselves and their families, housing is still very overcrowded do pets come way down the list of priorities.

There really are worse things than death.

In these kind of situations I would be all for encouraging the vet training centres to offer to neuter all feral and latchkey dogs and of course cats, and encourage owners to do so unless kept confined to their own property.
