Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / raw feeding quick question

Hi,

Just a quick question please?

Is tripe classed as offal when feeding raw? Or is it just heart, liver, kidney etc...?

Tripe is the lining of a cow's stomach. I think it's classed as offal, though I'm sure it's not as rich as liver, heart etc. I give more tripe than the other things you mention.

Heart doesn't count as offal - it's muscle meat and I only count kidney and liver as offal not tripe.

True, Heart is muscle meat and tripe is not offal. Liver, kidneys and what we used to call lights (Lungs) I think are classed as offal. I feed whole ungutted sprats at least twice a week so they have it all in and I get liver from Albion and they get a tablespoonfull at least once a week as well.

> tripe is not offal

Not sure really, tripe certainly doesn't look much like liver, kidneys etc but seems to be classed as offal in various places.

I aim to give both, but much more tripe than liver etc.

That is true, offal is classed as anything from the guts basically but for raw feeding read Liver and Kidneys as offal. Do not feed too much liver as it will give your dog the runs...big time ! I feed a basic of minced tripe with some other mixed minced meats (Oily fish/tripe and crushed veg, Offal/tripe and chicken) and chicken carcass and necks. Fresh sprats, lamb ribs, any left over veg, lamb hearts, the odd kidney if OH does not get to it first! occasional eggs and yoghurt, chunks of beef. I pick up a rabbit sometimes if I see one killed on the road infront of me and they will eat the lot fur and all! Aim to feed a little of everything over a couple of weeks then you will get your balanced diet sorted.

Thanks everyone, i was hoping to change feed supplier but they only supply chicken, beef and lamb and a meat mix which is a third offal. So i  might just have to stick to the old supplier for offal.

You can always pick up liver & kidneys at the supermarket, as you won't be using so much of it. That is, as long as you only have a few dogs.
