Topic Dog Boards / Health / does anyone use advocate?

after using frontline and it making NO difference (i also sprayed the house with acclaim) im looking to treat them again when the 4 weeks is up but obviously with something else.

any experiences of advocate or if not advantage?

with advantage the biggest one is 25-40kg well some of mine are 50kg....would you use the large one and then a pipette of the upto 10kg as well to make up the weight as one website says for dogs over 40kg use a combination of the different sizes?

with the advocate its just says extra large dogs over 25kg

Advocate doesn't treat ticks.

I thought it might not having had two reports from people lately of finding ticks on Advocate-d dogs (both direct, not hearsay and I found the tick on on dog which prompted the comment), and having just checked the website, ticks are not mentioned.

What parasites are you trying to get rid of? They all treat a different combination.

Advantix is probably the best for tick treatment. But it is EXTREMELY POISONOUS TO CATS; they need to be kept away from the dog until the product has thoroughly dried.

Yes, if using Advocate you do need to use both to make up the weight. I've got two packets in the cupboard, one for up to 40kg and the other for up to 25 kg.

Our vets used to be very keen on Advocate when it first came out. It does mites as well as fleas, though not ticks. Now they say they are a bit disappointed with it because it washes off so easily and the effect doesn't always last between doses (think jumping in streams, getting wet in the rain etc).

Sorry, no experience of Advantage.

Advocate won't treat for ticks, but it will treat for fleas, mites and also lungworm. I use it for lungworm treatment mainly.

Thanks guys, i am wanting to treat for fleas...sorry thought i had put that lol.

i have never yet seen a tick on my dogs ever, (prob shouldnt have said that!) so not concerned about it treating ticks but was quite interested in trying it as i have had ear mites in a couple of my dogs in the past so that would be useful. and lungworm is a good thing to safeguard but the primary reason is the fleas as i just cant seem to get rid at the moment and have never experienced this before in all my dog years ... Grrrrr

i can only see the extra large dog which says for dogs over 25kg ?

The extra-large packet has a blue tab that says 25kg-40kg. The picture on the front shows a Saint & a GSD.
The other packet that says it's for large dogs has a dark red tab that says 10kg-25kg and shows a Malamute (?) and a Ridgeback (I think!).

So I'm using both for a dog that weighs 62kg.

ah thanks the picture of the packet isnt clear enough for me to see that and the info write up just says for dogs over 25kg.
thats great i will order a combination of the packets to suit then and hope this works better than frontline!!!   cheers :)

For Fleas, I would use oral meds to avoid the use of putting pesticides on my dogs.

Use Program monthly and Capstar once-off to bazooka existing fleas.
