Glad to say now all our pet stores here now deal with the humane society and only have dogs & cats from them.
No more selling puppies & kittens in the window- which is great AweSome NEWS!!

PetSmart always has and now PetLand does also http://www.reginahumanesociety.ca/page.aspx?pid=534

One or two of our local pet stores also now have rescue puppies and kittens available.  They´ve been doing for a few years now and with dire situation over here every little helps.  They don´t charge for the animals but I believe they may make a small charge for the veterinary health check etc.  These shops all have their own veterinary surgeries on the premises and, of course, can only take in puppies and kittens, not adults.

Am I reading this right? Your pet shops only 'sell' puppies and kittens from shelters that need homes? Not from privately bred animals (puppy mills)?

If so, that is brilliant, amazing. I wish we could so this in the UK. I hate the fact that our pet shops sell puppies and they all come from puppy farms (mills), and nobody does anything about it, and the general public are too stupid to realise and even if they do, they still buy the cute pup they see. Makes me mad.

Good on you guys, someone is getting it right.

I´m not sure if your question is directed at me, ChinaBlue, or the OP, but here in my little corner of Spain it´s only SOME of the bigger petshops which help out with the rescue puppies and sadly they do also SELL "pedigree" puppies too.  There seems to be no such thing over here as going to a breeder and doing things the right way.  If someone wants a specific breed they go to a petshop.  My own dog/s came over with me from the UK where I researched breeders (well I´d already had the breed before so was halfway there) before getting my puppy.
