Topic Dog Boards / General / changing vets

I don't know if this topic has been covered before but does anyone know who veterinary records belong to?

I'm thinking of changing my vet after 14 years of being registered with them and have accumulated medical records  for several dogs' and cats'  over that time.

If I leave, do I have a right to a copy of the medical histories or are they forwarded on to the new vet practice?

Thanks

It is normal for the new vet to request them from the old vet and they will be transferred. Never had a problem and I would not expect you to.

my dog is registered with 2 vets and when she was being treated at one they needed to send off her full medical history for the insurance so they just called the other vets and they faxed it over to them.

Veterinary records are legal documents, and so the originals must be retained by the vet practice which wrote them - I'm not sure for how long, but certainly well over 10 years minimum. However you can always ask for a copy for yourself, and your new vet practice will want to ask the 'old' practice for a copy history to be faxed to them.
