Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / 4 week old puppies wont drink
- By dawn33 [gb] Date 22.05.12 23:49 UTC
my litter of 4 puppies are now 4 1/2 weeks old and i have been giving them soaked puppy food 4 times a day and always have water down for them to drink. the problem i am having is they are enjoying the food but i cant seem to get them to drink anything. i have tried putting puppy formula down, i have tried getting them to drink from my hand but they just wont drink. mum is still feeding them but she is losing her milk. any sugestions would be greatly appreciated.
they are atill gaining weight daily so not worried about that and they are nice and active when they are awake playing and chasing anything that moves.
i am worried that if i cant get them to drink soon then they may have trouble toileting.

I have never found them drinking much (unless it was hot) at this age when still having soaked food and Mum topping up, and the water was just there in case.  give it another week and they will be taking a fir amount of water once Mum is feeding less.

You could try offering goats milk ( full fat ) mine have always weaned with this and then progressed to water.

I would also try adding some goats milk to the water just to colour it slightly if the goats milk alone fills them up too much

Mine are 5 weeks, and have been drinking full fat goats milk with water (approx half & half) quite happily
