Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / raw food suppliers = again
- By furriefriends Date 19.05.12 15:36 UTC
Am just checking around to make sure I am getting good quality at an affordable price together with variety.

I need approx 1500grms of food a day 45kg a month so far not paying any more than 50.00 a month for it I like chunky rather than mince for them and carcasses and bones eg ribs etc. Big bones I only use occasionally recreationally so dont count.
What are you raw feeders doing at the moment. Unfortunately I dont have any abbotoirs (sp) or helpful butchers around me :(
your comments are appreciated

landywoods, chris!I like their minces, they are not sloppy like some suppliers, and i think they do chunked tripe which is good,i also think the prices are good, but delivery of bones can be a bit hit or miss, and they only do marrow bones and lamb ribs, when theyve got them. And if I get the little problem im having at the moment, sorted out satisfactorily,I ll carry on using them!
Anyone tried Bulmer foods, based at newark, notts?
- By furriefriends Date 20.05.12 13:40 UTC
Thanks pam will check their delivery area . )Es - agree about mince can be ratther soggy guess I am wanting mince that is how we would buy for us lol

I like Landywoods turkey necks.  They give the jaws, teeth, head a good workout & have a nice ratio of bone to meat.  Good value I think too.

I've been using raw to go and the food is great but the postage is a bit steep.

I was going to order from Bulmers, they apparently deliver as far up as here in Cheshire.  I'll let you know how it goes
- By furriefriends Date 20.05.12 20:23 UTC
I was looking at raw ro go and agree about postage havnt worked out a big order yet though. Think I may stay with albion as they seem the most competitive for me with ,mainly wanting chunky meats although I do use lamb mince just to cover most options l just would like to get lamb bones . Must get my order in as I cant possibbly afford this adhoc buying its not cost effective at all
- By Hants [gb] Date 20.05.12 20:48 UTC
We are using Raw to Go too.

The postage is quite expensive, but the flexibility of delivery dates and the fact that it is packed very well (so the delivery can be left for you) makes up for it.

As a newbie to raw feeding, I have appreciated the advice from the lady who runs it too!

cheers paula,i would be interested,i think i shot myself in the foot last time i made enquiries,i was asked how much i would be ordering, and  knowing how much some of you order, said"well, not a huge amount"and he directed me to a shop in the next town that sells their meat,so i meekly said,oh,ok,thanks, and that was that!he probably thought id only want ten pounds or so!but i shall try again for my next order.

Just out of interest, chris, when you say chunky, are the chunks huge?I once ordered some beef chunks, think it was daf,but might not have been, and they were vast,4or5inch chunks of tough ox cheek,I didnt dare feed them, they were far too tough to cut up!I ended up cooking it so I could cut it up.They mightve coped with it,but they were horribly bloody,too-i could just imagine them being wiped over the carpets!Id prefer 1 or 2" chunks!dunno about the dogs!
- By furriefriends Date 21.05.12 07:10 UTC
Yes the chunks can be quite big but usually vary in the pack. Mia gets the little ones obviously whispa the biggest etc. Oh gosh that sounds like the 3 bears and their porridge lol -I prefer chunks as it is nearer to natire and works their muscles as long as the dogs chew which mine usuallu do. Brooke can on occasion get too enthusiastic and reguritates but only occasionally as for bloody whispa eats outside the other two on washable flooring
-I also find the mince is more like porridge so like the back to nature types ie chiken bits carcasses chunks

I use "The Dog Food Company" and "Raw To Go". Postage for Raw to Go is steep, but I might be able to share with a friend in future, so it's not too bad anymore. I do use only minces though I have to say...
- By furriefriends Date 21.05.12 16:26 UTC
Hands up for sharing !

It's a bit frustrating that the raw suppliers can't see an opportunity.  I thought they could have a fb site where local people could club together.  Then the person ordering and doleing the stuff out could get a hefty discount.  I did suggest it to Landywoods - but I guess  they weren't up for it.  They seem to be in the rather old-fashioned camp.

My impression is that raw feeding is gaining popularity.  It would be interesting if anyone had any stats?

I've just been on a breed walk and several of the newer raw feeding companies (eg; Basils & Honey) gave quite large samples and the latter will give you a week free.  But I reckon they end up more expensive than feeding human grade (eg; value ranges & short date code stock) - but nevertheless they could serve as a great introduction for someone not sure how to go about raw feeding.

I've just ordered from 'raw to go' for the first time and have mixed reviews from the gang. None of them liked the offal mix [and it made me feel really sick, first time since I started barfing couple of years ago!] and they weren't too keen on the meaty mix either. I was disappointed with the, quite expensive, salmon. Full of scales and since mine have long beards, not the best thing.
I have been very happy with the turkey necks, duck necks, tripe blocks and all the tripe mixes though, so will order again, but not the offal or meaty mixes.

Chris I am investigating a new supplier so as I'm about 5 miles from you we could share? Will keep doing homework, I need to get a new freezer too as mine has died :(
- By furriefriends Date 21.05.12 21:24 UTC
That sounds good karen.  I am using albion atm who are reasonably priced as far as I can see after this thread. WHen you have finished your research give me a shout and we will compare notes :)
Dead freezer not helpful !!

I have a beautiful rottie pup who is currently eight months in fantastic condition lovely coat but I have to watch her weight and a very fussy retriever both currently fed on royal canin which they both love but is now bloody expensive at 51.99 a bag

I emailed Bulmers asking when they were next delivering up here and still have no reply :-(

I really wonder at the customer care of some of these places.

I stopped ordering from DAF when, even though I had left specific instructions about what to do with my delivery as I was going to be out, they put one box of food in my green wheelie bin so I didn't find it for days and then asked my neighbour to take the rest without telling her it was frozen food so she went out and I didn't get it til the next morning when it was all defrosting and she had blood all over her garage!!

Anglian were really reliable but the food had too much water in it.

Pets Pantry disappeared off the face of the earth!

Have heard some dubious reports about Landywoods.

It just seems ridiculously difficult to find a reliable supplier who doesn't charge the earth and has good products
- By colliepam Date 02.06.12 11:41 UTC
inclined to agree, especially after the last bit of bother ive had, solved now though. When I emailed bulmers,he emailed back asking me to give him a ring, perhaps you could try that,if you can find the number. Its annoying because Newark is not that far away if Id got my own transport,I could go and get it myself!I dont like to pester friends and family with cars,I prefer to save asking favours for really important stuff like vets trips.
I ll try when my freezers down a bit,but I probably wont have any more luck than you did. Thanks for letting me know, though,I appreciate it.

> Anglian were really reliable but the food had too much water in it

This is something I've been trying to work out, when the packets list 76% moisture, is this basically 76% added water to only 26% actual meat? or is it just the moisture in the product when it's frozen? Sorry for a stupid question i just keep getting different answers about it
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 05.06.12 14:39 UTC

>when the packets list 76% moisture, is this basically 76% added water to only 26% actual meat? or is it just the moisture in the product when it's frozen?

It should be the moisture that's naturally in the meat.
