Topic Other Boards / Foo / Calling Lea - ash tree?

I think it's you I want, my memory is atrocious :-P  Apologies if it's not!!

I have what I have been informed is a young ash tree growing in my front garden.  It's *right* next to the front wall of the house so it has to come out, I'll be doing that this weekend.

Now, I like ash trees and I was rather hoping it was one!  But, I am also being told it'll get flippin enormous and I'll need a huge garden for it.  I have a huge garden - 127ft down the long side, and it's a corner plot.

However, do you have any idea if it's possible to just keep said tree trimmed small like a big shrub?  I have a nice spot in the lawn with a pre-dug hole (thanks Linc...) that it would look great in, but it's maybe 10ft away from my garage (which is well away from the house btw, it was built a bit randomly!).  Possible or no?

Oh and in similar news - the transplanted apple trees are doing very well, they blossomed nicely :-) as did the big one which is looking much healthier since the uberprune!

Hiya, yes it is me LOL
Yes not a problem :) :)
They do get large, if you lay a tree down then thats the length of the roots. And even if you prune it the roots will still grow to the length as if not pruned, but as they do take a while to grow then you wont have to worry about it for 10 years or so :)
You would need to prune it regularily to keep it small, say twice a year, but the beauty is you can prune it at any time through the year unlike cherrys etc :)
The only problem you may have is getting it out, as they have a long tap root which is a pain to dig out :(
If you cant get it out, look out for seedlings (I have them growing all over my garden as have an Ash tree in my garden and a load in the wood at the bottom,) and pull then up and plant in a pit to grow on (two long bright green leaves)
If you cant get it out and need to chop it off, put a load of salt on the stump to kill it :) :)
Just make sure you keep the trees well watered and they will fruit :) :)

Brilliant, thanks :-)

I suspect it may be a chop job if the roots are that long lol!  But useful for future reference as I do like Ash trees :-)
